There are many types of fans collecting sports autographs. Although there is no exact hierarchy among them, there's still an invisible line that draws an amateur collector from an expert one. Some collectors are just beginners who may have just recently decided to collect memorabilia out of curiosity or because of a coincidence wherein their favorite player signed off their shirts, which in turn inspired them to join the collector's club.
Some are advanced beginners in this field - not new to the trade but not really that highly experienced. But there are those who are really masters in collecting sports autographs. It may be because they are really harcore fans or perhaps they are people who are in the business of selling autographs. Some fans get in-person autographs. However, this is difficult to do that's why some also go for just buying signed items.
Well, whatever type of fan they may be and whatever reason they may have for collecting sports autographs, here is a list of items most commonly marked with those precious signatures, along with some tips of how they are valued in the trade.
- Index card – the most common and most affordable autograph item.
- Ball – the second most common of all perhaps. It's good to get a ball signed by a single player instead of multiple ones as this is much more valuable than the latter.
- Bat – game-used bats with signs of wear and tear are much more valuable.
- Trading card – always check the back of the card for a certification of its genuineness.
- Jersey – this item is easy to duplicate. That's why to avoid getting a bogus one, always check for stains, wear and tear or any proof that it was used in a game.
- Photograph – colored photos and those signed before the 80's have greater value, but be careful again with fake ones!
- Boxing gloves, robe, and trunks - an entire boxing outfit is highly expensive, especially if it was worn during a fight.
- Postcard – before, GPCs or government postcards were signed and sent by mail
- Signed letters and documents – an ALS or Autographed Letter Signed is a highly valuable item as this was really written and signed by the athlete himself. Sometimes an autograph is cut from a document and framed; this is called a "cut".
- Book – a signed book written by the athlete himself is precious. However, when buying one, always check that it is in good condition first.
- Sports fanpacks – a fan pack is a package sent to an avid fan. It may include just any type of item and these items may even have autographs. Some people write to their favorite players to have sports autographs by mail.
There are still other items that can be used for autograph signing. In fact, any surface that can be written on is a good candidate already. There are elements that increase the value of a specific item. For example, balls, bats and photos, which are already thirty-five years old and above, are called vintage collectibles and therefore have greater value. Likewise, complete sports attires, which were used during a game, in a practice or in photo shoots, are also highly valuable and very expensive. On the other hand, there are also swatches, or pieces of equipment usually attached at the back of card, available for those who cannot manage to pay for the complete attire. Just always remember though, that in buying any type of item, always check for its authenticity.
