As the world learned and adopted technology, the need for sources of energy became one of the primary necessities. Fuels and other non-renewable resources have been used for years as primary sources of energy and are utilized by many countries. But since these are limited, the world is faced with the challenge of how to extend the thinning supply of energy. With man's intellect and resourcefulness, alternative energy sources were discovered and developed. These can be harnessed naturally and repeatedly in an unending cycle.
There are different types of alternative energy sources. The solar power or the energy from sunlight is used to generate both electricity and fuel with the help of solar panels. Considering the amount of energy the earth absorbs from the sun, the solar energy is deemed to be a sufficient source. However, during the night, it becomes useless. It requires the use of batteries to store electricity, which can translate to higher costs. Hydroelectric power is a type of energy formed by forcing water movement through a small passage to produce electricity. Geothermal power is an energy source produced from a steam taken from a drill deep down from the earth's surface to turn a turbine and generate electricity. This is considered as one of the best nuclear energy alternatives available at present. It does not require any use of fuel to make it work. Hence, it produces very little emission which is rather more environment friendly compared to nuclear power. However, there is the possibility that a specific location may cool down which would result to depletion. Wind energy produces electricity through the use of turbines to convert kinetic force. It is easily renewable and pollution-free. However, it is barred in some areas due to animal impact particularly to birds. Biomass is a source of energy taken from burned fuel. One common example is ethanol, which uses corn or sugar. Ethanol is just like gasoline in that it can be used as car fuel. However, since this method involved burning that produces carbon dioxide, this has become one of the primary reasons of global warming. The waves and tides produce energy through the crashing of waves into a submerged propeller or a turbine, which then produces electricity. Solar power satellites placed along the Earth's orbit use a microwave form of power conduction to send solar power to Earth through a very huge antenna. Unlike mere solar energy that is utilized in the Earth's surface, this system can supply energy day and night. However, this kind of energy generating system is too costly to be produced. The NASA and other agencies, however, were trying to come up with a solution to use reusable materials to build the satellite someday and eventually replace nuclear power.
These alternative energy sources are practical ways to address man's need for survival. All have their advantages and some distinguished disadvantages. Since man is created to be brilliant - as proven through these discoveries and inventions - only man as well has the capacity to weigh down which alternative works best for him and for the environment.
