Collecting sports autographs can sometimes be a hard and tricky business. Aside from the abundance of spurious autograph copies circulating the web and the market in general, personally collecting it from the athletes themselves can prove to be difficult too.
Because of the emergence of autograph collecting and selling as an industry, many celebrities have started limiting the autographs they give out to prevent non-fans from getting their autographs and then selling it for a profit. Some will only sign on certain events or only when paid to do so, while others will try to make sure you are a true fan instead of an autograph dealer.
So how do you go about collecting sports autographs?
The old fashioned method
The old-fashioned way of course is to wait in line, try to meet the athlete in person and ask for an autograph. While there's a big chance the athlete may ignore you or grab someone else's paper or handkerchief, the reward of having your handkerchief or your personal stuff signed by the athlete in person is enormous. Not only will you be sure you have an authentic copy, you'll also have an experience to cherish for your entire life. After all, it's not often people get to meet sports stars and have them sign an autograph.
Try asking for it thru mail
Some fans send letters to their favorite athletes to ask for autographs. Others just send fan mail and receive signed letters or autographed photos. The more unique or attention grabbing a mail is, the more likely it'll receive a response and an enclosed autograph from the athlete. One rule to follow is to always be polite. Try to be engaging in your letter. If the athlete sees you're a true fan and not just some outfit trying to get a quick buck out of their signatures, you'll get that autograph you've been searching for – and perhaps even more!
Buying for it
Of course, if you'd like to skip the hard work and just go straight to collecting, you can try to buy from others who were lucky enough to get the athlete's autograph. Be aware however that almost 80% of autographs being sold on eBay are fakes. While some copies would include a Certificate of Authenticity, there's no assurance at all that even the COA are authentic.
There are some reputable authenticating agencies however whose COA you can definitely trust. Some of them include: GAI, Steiner Sports, Tristar, Upper Deck Authenticated (UDA), and especially PSA/DNA, the world's largest third party authenticator of signed memorabilia and autographs.
Going to signing shows
The more expensive method in collecting sports autographs is by going to signing shows or autograph shows. These are events arranged by a sports team or a dealer exclusively for autograph signing. In these events, the athletes are paid to appear in public and sign autographs for fans and collectors. There's usually an admission fee for one of these shows. The less frequent an athlete featured in one of these shows signs an autograph, the higher the likelihood that the admission price in these shows would be more expensive.
