The other Renaissance Man: Shedding Light On The Man Behind The Famous Artist

If you can name one art work during the Renaissance period, what would it be and who was the Famous Artist behind it? You'd probably think of the works of Leonardo Da Vinci like Monalisa and Michelangelo's Paintings on the Sistine Chapel, since they are both famous artists during this era.

Leonardo Da Vinci was Michelangelo's contender when it comes to all forms of art. However, Da Vinci was the one who earned the title ultimate "renaissance man" because he was able to built and not just plan out most of his inventions and designs. In a common man's point of view a renaissance man can be anyone who's considered as the "jack-of-all-trades". Of course, considering that Da Vinci was not only a painter he was also a sculptor and an engineer and an architect, just like Michelangelo.

Michelangelo's childhood was marked with a simple dream. He was raised by a family of successful bankers and businessmen. But Michelangelo showed no interest in school; he often seeks the company of artists and the age of 13, Michelangelo became the apprentice of a Famous Artist named Domenico Ghirlandaio. At age 14 he was sent to study Humanism with another apprentice also because of the recommendation of Ghirlandaio. And at the early age of 17 Michelangelo was able to create a splendid sculpture of Madonna of the steps and Battle of the centaurs. Circumstances proved to be misleading Michelangelo since he was often thrown out by things like political upheaval, influences and recommendations. Oddly enough Michelangelo used his artistic talent to persuade a priest to allow him to study corpses in an underground hospital ran by the church. His studies inspired him to create an enormous sculptor of Hercules.

His accidental move to Rome was the result of a swindling middleman who cheated Michelangelo to sell his sculptor at a lower price. However, the middleman was so impressed in Michelangelo's work that he invited him to continue his work in Rome. He was then called upon for contracts after contracts by bishops and cardinals. Almost all his early works in Rome were gigantic perfect sculptors of gods and saints. His most famous work however, was done in Florence - the sculptor of David. He was once again invited back to Rome to work on a tomb for Pope Julius II. His numerous tasks in the Sistine chapel took him 40 years of his life to accomplish but never to his satisfaction.

The last works of Michelangelo was a showcase of his architectural genius. Back in Florence, he was asked to reconstruct the front of San Lorenzo Basilica. And in 1546 he was appointed as the chief architect of St. Peter's Basilica. Because of this Famous Artist's busy life, he was unable to expand his work freely. He could've been the Renaissance man if he was able to built most of the sketches he made. Today, his architectural designs can be found in the archives of the Vatican, a rare and valuable collection of a man who spent half of his life dedicated to religious works.

Only a few recognizes the ingenious in Michelangelo when it comes to other things outside sculptor and painting. He is after all a great artist who painted an entire Basilica's ceiling for the sake of religion. And that's what he's famous for – the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo like Da Vinci was born an artist, a great mathematician, engineer and an architect. A Famous Artist who gave a clear glimpse of what art is all about.
