Based on the studies of the Energy Information Administration, the world's biggest energy consumer is the United States. Its commercial and industrial societies account for half of the total energy consumption of the country. With the continuous depletion of energy resources and processes that pose harm to the environment, the current economic conditions have forced these businesses to look for alternative ways in saving and lowering the cost of their operations. One of the ways to cut down on these expenses and minimize their contribution in producing pollutants is the use of alternative energy sources. Using these alternative sources of energy helps in conserving the environment and the non-renewable energy that they are currently using.
Today, there are several alternative energy sources that people and business can utilize in order to save on electrical power. The following are some of the various types of alternative energy that are being used:
1. Nuclear power – Nuclear fission is the process applied in order to harness nuclear energy. Nuclear power plants use reactors in order to heat water and produce steam which can be converted to mechanical power that generates electricity. In 2007, surveys show that about 14% of the world's electricity was from nuclear power.
2. Biomass energy – Biological matter from living and dead plants, organisms and the like are known as biomass and are used as fuel source in many industries. Part of the United States' electrical power comes from biomass resources.
3. Compressed Natural Gas or CNG – This is a popular alternative to diesel, gasoline or propane.
4. Geothermal power – Geothermal power is reliable and cost-effective and is an efficient method in gathering renewable energy from nature. It has been used for a very long time especially for heating and bathing in the ancient Roman era. With modern scientific improvisation, it is now used in generating electricity.
5. Hydroelectricity – From the word 'hydro' which means 'water', electricity from this source is harvested by transforming the force of gravity of falling water at a certain height to mechanical power.
6. Wind power – Popular wind systems such as windmills and wind turbines transform energy brought by the wind into electricity. Most of these are found in wind farms.
7. Solar power – The sun is also a source of alternative energy through solar cell panels that process sunlight and convert it to electricity.
