Here are some useful road bike tips for beginners out there. Even advance cyclists and seasoned veterans may learn a thing or two in here which they haven't known before.
Pedaling
To develop smooth pedaling, use a fixed bike gear. Not only will it help you develop smooth pedaling, it will also help you increase your leg strength and pedaling speed. Fixed bike gears work in a way that forces riders to continuously pedal so long as the bike is moving forward. This is because a fixed bike gear has no freewheel. The sprocket is screwed directly onto a fixed hub which means the bike cannot coast. The pedals will always turn in cadence with the wheels' motion.
For inexperienced riders, you can start practicing with fixed bike gear in stationary bicycles.
Cadence
To find out your target cadence, do the following:
1. Look for a long stretch road (2 miles should do it) where you can safely go biking. The stretch shouldn't have cross streets or heavy traffic.
2. Warm up for 15 minutes and then ride the stretch hard using your biggest gear. Take note of your finish time and your heart rate.
3. Settle down with 15 minutes of easy spinning.
4. Ride the course again, only this time maintain the same heart rate as you had in your first lap. This time, use a rear cog that's 2 steps larger than the first one you used and which allows you to keep a 100 rpm cadence.
5. Again, take note of your finish time.
6. Rest for a day and then do the test in reverse. Use large rear cogs first and then switch to smaller rear cogs.
7. Compare your times. The run which gives your best time should give you your ideal cadence.
Shifting
The trick to smooth shifting lies in planning. Instead of waiting until you feel the difficulty of pedaling, anticipate the moment when you think you'll need a shift in gears. Ease up on your pedaling and time your shifting in one smooth motion. If you time it right, you shouldn't lose any significant speed.
Advanced road bike tips used in racing and competitive biking
Cornering
There are two things you need to keep in mind when cornering. First is to not lose too much momentum especially when you're racing, and the second is to not go too fast and reach over the edge of the road.
Saving momentum
Before a turn, shift down into a lower gear. Stop pedaling and start leaning on your bike. In recovering, use your body weight in pedaling.
Going too fast
Lean as you make the turn. Stand as you pedal. This gives your tires more grip and puts all your weight on the outside pedal. Slow down long before the turn so that when it comes up, you don't have to apply the brakes or put too much effort into slowing down.
Precision steering
Keep your eyes focused at least ten to twenty feet ahead. While it may be tempting to look down on your front tire, this won't help at all in keeping you in a straight line. Use your peripheral vision to note obstacles and focus your eyes on the road ahead.
These are just some of the most common road bike tips. As you progress and gain experience, you may even learn some new techniques which others may not know.
