Buying road bikes is just like buying cars. There's really not much of a difference. Just like buying a car, you look for a couple of things in a bike to make your decision of buying a bike; especially if it's your very first road bike. Professional cyclists go for top road bikes since they aren't really concerned with how much top road bikes costs but are more interested in a bike's performance, speed, and durability.
However, for beginners, it really isn't advisable to break the bank purchasing a high-end road bike. A bike costing less than $1,500 would do well for the beginning cyclist. These road bikes are made with beginners in mind, and usually sport aluminum frames and cheaper components. The geometry of such bikes are designed in such a way as to make beginners feel more comfortable; as opposed to bikes designed for competition, which are designed more for aerodynamics than for comfort.
There are however, some universal things which one should look for in top road bikes, regardless of whether the buyer is a novice, an advanced enthusiast, or a professional cyclist. Here are some things you should include in your checklist:
1. Perhaps the most important criterion when buying road bikes is its fit to the rider. comfort should be your top concern when buying your bike. A bike with very expensive components and a sleek finish may look nice and feel nice buying, but if that bike is not fit for the rider, the rider would soon find out they've just wasted a ton of money on a bike that only looks good but doesn't feel good when. Best advice? Test at least 3 bikes when buying, making sure you pick the one that best fits your height, build, and posture.
2. If you feel uncomfortable in any one of the components in your bike, feel free to swap them out for one which you feel comfortable with. If you want a larger saddle for comfort, or a different style handlebar for better grip or support, don't be shy about it. Tell the store's assitant so they can get you what you need. Better speak up now than regret later when you've brought the bike home.
3. Top road bikes are often made of titanium. Titanium is very light yet very durable. Carbon fiber frames on the other hand are much more affordable. Some prefer a combination of titanium and carbon frames for better handling and support. While others choose alloy bike frames for both affordability and strength. Whatever frame you choose depends on how you would use the bike. Is it for recreation, sports, or competition?
4. Older models will fetch you cheaper prices than new models recently out on the market. While newer models may feature better design and quality, older models aren't really that far behind.
Unless you're a competitor or a professional cyclist, settling for older models really won't mean much of a difference. They're still of good quality and probably an even better purchase because of the drop in price.
