Sometimes in pursuing your hobby you will stumble on productivity blocks, produced by the difficulty of a technically easy project or plan. A project will only seem difficult because there may be some things that you haven't learned yet. These hinder you from continuing your work and lead to damaging your imaginative fire while working, which in turn produces a poorly-made project. Woodworking may also present you some blocks that will hinder your work. For that very reason, here are some very helpful woodworking tips and tricks to keep you working!
As woodworking is simply the combining and finishing of different wooden pieces, the most crucial activity a woodworker encounters is, Gluing. Keeping the parts in place is important. Turned and improperly glued parts, even though they may be finished and sanded perfectly, will produce an imperfect project. Gluing should be given enough attention because as woodworkers put it, you cannot unglue what you have already glued. To keep the pieces in place and avoid any "slip-ups", use clamps. But sometimes clamps can be improperly handled and cause "slip-ups" as you are applying a clamp on one corner. Before this happens, or even before the glue dries, use the first of the woodworking tips, apply a closing miter. Closing Miters are usually used on frames, or other four-sided pieces, to keep it from sliding. These will apply pressure evenly throughout the pieces and keep them in place as you tighten the clamps; a much easier task than clamping and reclamping pieces endlessly. If your pieces on the other hand are not four-sided, your most potent weapon in applying the right pressure is nonetheless the pressure clamps. To keep the pieces in place while applying even pressure, you have to use even numbers of clamps. First, use small clamps and apply light pressure either horizontally or vertically. Then use the other clamps on the other sides, and apply the same amount of pressure throughout the pieces by turning the clamps. If you only need a small amount of pressure on your project, there is a more resourceful way of clamping it in place. Prepare a 3'' diameter piece of PVC pipe. Slit the pipe in the middle using the band saw or other cutting tools. The result is pinch-type clamp that gives enough pressure for small clamping jobs.
After pressure is applied, some glue will squeeze out of the pieces. The woodglue used will dry and become as hard as rock, ruining your pieces with ugly bumps if not removed quickly. You'll need to consult the last of the woodworking tips in avoiding this. To remove this perfectly, as removing wet glue leaves a trail that could still damage your work, you'll need a properly sharpened putty knife. Let the squeeze out to dry in place to a rubbery consistency. The amount of time you have to wait will depend on the surroundings, temperature of the shop, amount of glue, etc. Make sure that the putty knife is sharpened in a chisel-like fashion, having the same square end. You'll produce this by sharpening the putty knife's end across a sand paper. After the glue had reached the right consistency, peel it using the end of the putty knife; producing a soft, glue-free surface.
These woodworking tips will greatly help you produce the best wood working project you'll ever do. From correctly clamping and avoiding slip-ups to removing the squeeze outs, these tips are essential "how-tos" for every woodworker!
