Some people think so negatively about a dog leash. They see it as something that strangles their dog and constricts its independence. Some owners may say, "I want my dog to just have its freedom." Others exclaim, "A leash would make a dog aggressive." Well, in the name of dog training, leashes are not things to make a dog's life miserable. This dog training equipment is in fact, useful for both the dog and the owner in establishing a good owner to pet relationship. Leashes are useful things, especially if one knows how to use it properly. So, what are the reasons why dog leash training should be done to those pooches? Here are some good points.
- Safety. Definitely, if the dog has a leash, then it wouldn't go too far from where its master is. Just think about this, dogs would always run around and play. So what will happen if a dog is left without a leash at a public place? It may run across the street, stand up at strangers, and come running over other animals (as its basic prey instinct is). But with a leash, the owner can pull the dog closer to it and thereby avoid any unwanted dog mishaps.
- Good Timing. When a dog has a leash, it wouldn't go over a long distance from its master, and so whatever the dog does, the owner can see it. If a dog does something good, then the owner can immediately give an equivalent reward or praise. On the other hand, if the dog did a little mishap, then the owner is also there to correct it. A leash enables the owner to give the praise or correction just right after a dog does something. And this is one good foundation in conditioning a dog. If a good timing is not done, there might be some difficulty training the dog about what is good or bad. For instance: a dog poops at the pathways and then right after that it went to its chewable toy to play. Then after a few minutes, the owner saw the poop in the middle of the pathway and he or she began correcting the dog. The dog might think that the wrong thing it did is not actually the act of eliminating on the pathway but instead, the act of chewing the toy. See, good timing is really very important in dog training so that the pooch can tell what a good act is from a bad one.
- Removing Choices. Leashes are also effective in training the dog to come when it is called, because it leaves the dog with no any other choice. For example, a dog has no leash and the owner calls out the dog. The dog probably has many more action choices - there's the squirrel that's really good to chase, there's a cute poodle on the other street, and the boss is calling out. In this case, coming to the boss may be last on the list. But with a leash, a dog has no choice; it really has to come to its owner. This technique is quite good when one is still starting with the dog training wherein consistency and repetition is really essential. And after the dog gets into the habit of coming when called, it would definitely come to the owner even sans the leash.
- Shows the Boss. Lastly, a leash gives the owner the control over his or her dog. And this is really important in developing dog obedience. If the dog knows no master, it won't and never will follow any commands, leaving all other dog training tricks to be useless. On the other hand, if a dog knows who the boss is, then most likely - it would grow up to be a good, obedient, cuddly pooch.
Dog leash training is not something that would take away the freedom of a dog. Instead, it is a way for owners to condition their dogs first, so that when the good fellow is unleashed, it still knows how to follow commands.
