Teaching dog training tricks can become so usual, especially for owners whose dogs are somehow advanced. There are so many sites offering tips on how to teach your dog to sit, to roll over, and to walk by your side. Most probably, the dog has already mastered these tricks. Why not try something new? For the next summer, get your dog into a different habit – learn how to teach your dog to swim!
Yes, dogs are excellent swimmers, but contrary to the popular belief, dogs don't know how to swim unless they are taught how. No newborn puppy can just water tread right then and there, right? For that perfect dog training on how to swim, heed these simple steps and tips.
The Swimming Lesson Proper
The first thing to consider when taking the dog for some swimming lesson is the place. The swimming area should be clean and safe for both the dog and the owner. A private pool is the best place, albeit small streams and lakes are also desirable. On the other hand, the owner must pay much attention to safety. Put the dog on a leash and let it swim in shallow-waters first. Also take note that if the weather is bad, it is wise to just cancel the lesson.
When the dog is already in the water, try to let it feel comfortable to the area. Splash some water to the dog, but avoid hitting its face as this may cause the animal to be frightened. If the dog feels jerky and is panicking, hold its abdomen and give the dog ample support. This will make it calm down. When it's already calm on the water, a toy can be placed in front of it. This will encourage the dog to swim over to the toy and practice the basic skills of swimming. If the dog is doing well, it's time to bring it down to a deeper area and make it practice some more.
Don't forget to always praise the dog and give some fine words of encouragement. If the dog doesn't get the skill at once, don't get impatient; just continue encouraging it to swim while giving some support. On the other hand, if the dog gets tired, let it rest.
If the dog has some swimming difficulty, as when it raises its head straightly and swings his front legs in distress; provide some support by holding up its front legs while teaching him how to swim. With practice, the dog will soon get the skill and swim on his own.
Then, after the swimming lesson, don't forget to give the dog some good amount of bathing with a fine soap or shampoo as certain microorganisms may be lurking under water and cause some skin diseases.
The main principle on teaching a dog how to swim, and as what is also applied in any other dog training, is fairly easy – the key is patience, support and consistency.
When the dog is trained how to swim regularly, it will develop and improve the skill fast. And who knows, maybe next time, one's pooch would win in a swimming race!
