Whether your rare coins collection is composed of of a few dozen coins or a thousand pieces, it is important that you take very good care of them to keep their current values intact. Coins that are taken for granted, not given good care and are subjected to unnecessary handling can easily decrease in value. Coins may be made of metals but that doesn't mean they are unbreakable or incapable of being tainted. A single scratch on the surface of a coin can easily decrease its price in half. Coins that are piled together or stored in metal-based containers can go through discoloration processes. Either they turn greenish, brownish or yellowish in color. Discoloration in coins substantially decreases their values. So you must provide extra care in storing and organizing your coins.

1.) Never try cleaning the coins if you have no idea how to do it. Any type of cleaning materials like water or other cleaning liquids can cause great damage on coins. What you should do is seek out an expert, someone who is more experienced and specializes in cleaning coins. This way you avoid the risk of decreasing the value or even worse damaging your coins because you unnecessarily did the cleaning yourself. Always leave the cleaning job to the experts.

2.) When handling your rare coins collection, always try to hold them by their edges. And as much as possible, wear soft cotton gloves whenever you are handling or inspecting them. Don't touch them with your bare fingers. Dirt and sweat on your skin could be transferred to the coin and cause considerable damage.

3.) Never ever store your coins in stacks. In storing them, make sure that not one coin is in contact with another coin. Stacked coins when moved or even simply nudged can cause the coins to rub against each other causing scratches and damages on the coins' surfaces. The most common and efficient way of storing your coins is by placing each of them in individual plastic sheets and storing them in a binder, a coin album or a coin folder. In buying albums, buy the ones that are exclusively manufactured for holding coins. Or you can store them in a stable display case.

4.) As much as possible, avoid unnecessarily handling the coins. Too much handling can cause scratches. Though these scratches can't be seen by the naked eye, a magnifying glass can. All appraisers and purchasers of coins use magnifying glasses to inspect coins so those scratches on your coins are easily seen by them.

5.) If you are storing your rare coins collection in a display case, make sure that the display case is enclosed. Open display cases will expose the coins to the open air thus causing the metals to oxidize and change in color. See to it as well that the room where the display case is placed is dry. Always protect your coins from moisture.
