You've seen it in a lot of movies and television shows—fathers and grandfathers bringing out shoeboxes' worth of antique coins to show to their kids, right? More often than not, these men tell every detail there is to learn about a certain coin to their kids while the latter either stare in amazement or sheer boredom. Nevertheless, coin collecting became a colorful hobby that surely everyone must have been interested in at least once or twice in their lives.
Coin collecting hobby did not sprout as a result of accidentally tripping on a bronze coin or whatnot. In fact, this is a hobby that dates back centuries ago. There are written records from that of Ancient Rome and Mesopotamia proving the existence of this centuries-old hobby. But back then, coin collectors were usually scholars and state treasuries. The hobby continued until the Renaissance period but during this time, it was called the "Hobby of Kings" because collecting coins became a craze among the powerful and wealthy citizens, including kings for they were the only ones who could afford this. The other sectors of the society had other necessities to take care of during this time.
Owing to the fact that this is a hobby that only the rich and wealthy could afford, some of the early coin collectors include Pope Boniface VIII, Louis XIV of France, Henry IV of France, and Emperor Maximilian of the Holy Roman Empire to name a few. There are different opinions as to who is the first coin collecting enthusiast. Some say that it is the Italian scholar and poet Petrarch, while others hold that it was Roman Emperor Augustus who was also known to have given some parts of his collection as gifts. The association of coin collecting with the privileged eventually faded later on and soon, even the middle class jumped aboard the hobby. Although people say that the middle class took part in this growing hobby just so they could prove that they are indeed wealthy and sophisticated enough.
Come 19th and 20th century, the hobby truly boomed in popularity. Today, collectors continue to scour the ends of the earth to get their hands on valuable and exotic coins. Although today, collectors also go by the term numismatist. There are also organizations and groups existing today that are solely created to serve this hobby. One of which is the American Numismatic Society that was formed in 1858. The formation of coin collecting groups generated public awareness , paving the way for more fans and devotees.
This is indeed one of the most interesting hobbies for it opens up enthusiasts to different cultures, traditions, and histories that are relevant to the coins they accumulate. One's knowledge is definitely broadened once you get yourself involved in coin collecting. In the United States alone, there are around 15 million coin collectors—and still counting!
