When dealing with mealtime problems, an owner who aims to be the leader of the pack needs to realize that he or she cannot fight fire with fire. Step 1
For dogs showing food aggression, kneel down on top of the dog until its attention is caught. It will either stop struggling or turn its head. This action will make the dog slowly realize that the owner is the authority figure. The owner may have to repeat this maneuver for as long as the dog shows aggression.

Step 2
The owner has to eat first before the dog. This should be done as part of dog training to avoid the occasion of it begging for food when it's the owner's meal time. Also, it will get the idea that the owner is the alpha dog and therefore should be served first. The owner may put the dog in another room or outside, perhaps the yard or garden when it's dinner time so that it won't get used to seeing its master eat and start begging.

Step 3
Sit with the dog or near its eating area when it eats. Pet it once and then leave. This will allow it to think that there is no threat to its food supply.

Step 4
If a dog growls at its owner when its food gets moved, the owner should set aside its food for 30 seconds, then return it to the exact spot where it was taken. This will assure the dog that there is nothing in its surroundings that will permanently take its food.

Step 5
When the dog growls during mealtime, the owner should loudly say "no" or whatever negative word is used to mark bad behavior. Then, take its food away from its sight and reach.

Dog training is important during mealtime so that it can eat right and be healthy while the owner will not have to endure additional stress.
