Show jumps are obstacles used in competitive horse jumping sports like show jumping, hunter and equitation. Obstacle size and types will depend on the course and the ability of the both the rider and the horse. Obstacle bars and fences used in hunter and eventing competitions are usually made look native unlike the brightly and creatively designed and colored show jumps used in jumping competitions. Bars are designed to fall down when struck by horse.
Chevrons
Most typically known as arrowhead, these obstacles are triangular in shape and with a point towards the ground. Also used together with other obstacles, chevron tests the ability of the rider to regain control of his horse after the obstacle.
Bounce
The bounce is one type of show jumps commonly used on eventing competitions. It is called bounce because horses bounces between the two fences placed closely together. Because of the jump's placement, the horse cannot make a full stride or jump all at once over the two fences. The horse then bounces each fence to cross the obstacle. The course is made to slow down a speeding horse and also teaches the animal good balance.
Brush fence
An obstacle to test the sense of sight of both rider and horse, the brush fence is a jump with a concrete base and a brush on top of it.
Bullfinch
Much like the brush fence, the bullfinch also incorporates a solid base with a higher brush on top of it. The height makes the horse to jump through the bullfinch instead of jumping over it. The brush is quite high and the horse will not be able to see the landing. Trust and full confidence of the horse on the rider are tested in the bullfinch. The horse's attentiveness is also challenge because he should be able to jump through such a thick and high brush.
Combinations
Show jumps that are made by the combination of banks, logs, water, and other elements. It can also be a combination of two or more show jumps. The coffin, for example, is a combination that used the change in terrain, striding, and various obstacles.
Ditch obstacle
These show jumps are used in advanced competition that can reach up to 11 feet high and 10 inches wide fences. The rider's concentration must not vary and should ride with confidence and positivity.
Drop fence
One of the more risky show jumps, the drop fence tests the rider and the horse's balance. Usually, the horse jumps over the obstacle and need to be on footing on a lower landing than the one they took off. The rider must control the speed and make the horse jump conservatively to prevent injuring the horse's legs.
Log fence
Log fences are used in cross-country phase of eventing and hunter competition. Unlike obstacles in the jumping competition, the fences are solid and do not fall down. Advanced riders typically seat more defensively and avoid raising off the saddle incase the horse accidentally hits the fences and makes a violent landing.
Oxer
The rails are set in two ways, even or uneven. Types of oxers vary according to the placement of the rail e.g. ascending and descending oxers. The ascending is set with the front rail lower than the back rail. The descending type has the back rail lower than the front rail and can be dangerous for the horses and riders.
