Horse jumps should be commenced as early as the colt manifests interest in hopping over logs and other low obstacles. The colt may be doing it just for fun but for a trainer, it is a possibility of training the colt for more tricks such as horse jumps and taking him to competition.
It is against the horse's natural instincts to carry a rider. Therefore, the animal must be carefully conditioned to respond to certain signals and must also have complete confidence on its rider. No rider who is not a fine horseman should attempt to teach a colt to jump as his own awkwardness and lack of balance will ruin any chances the colt may have of becoming a sane, well-trained balanced jumper or hunter. A person who is starting his own jumping profession should also choose mount that is thoroughly steady and reliable and wait until he has had many years of experience on a great variety of jumpers before tackling a colt.
A horse must not be trained on horse jumps until he is at least four years old. The animal can be trained at a much younger age but this will almost always develop such blemishes as bowed tendons, ring, or side bones, etc.
The jumping lane
A jumping lane is the first and most practical thing to use in the first lessons in horse jumps. It should be constructed to be removable and able to set at different heights. Although a jumping lane is not really essential it is very useful and easy to use. It should be straight r curved, on level-ground or up and down slight hills. It should have a series of movable jumps set at thirteen foot intervals. If it is laid out in a straight line the exit gate should be set at the side so that the horse is forced to stop and turn before going out, otherwise he may develop the habit of rushing.
In addition to the jumping lane, you will need a number of low narrow obstacles that can be easily moved from place to place. You should also have several standard post-and-rail jumps with pins that allow the bars to be raised three inches at a time.
Outside course
An outside course is not hard to build and is of great help in teaching hunters to keep an even stride between fences. Any variety of natural obstacles may be used. The course should be constructed that the horse works in a circle and many come at the jumps from either way. If the terrain is somewhat hilly and rough, all the better perhaps you will be able to construct such as things as a slide, a drop jump which becomes a landing jump when taken the other way.
Setting up the proper jumping and outside course for training a colt in horse jumps is necessary. Always make sure that the materials are strong, sturdy, and unbreakable by the horse. Once the horse finds out that he can break free from the course, he will always find a way to escape. Horses are intelligent and timid animals that have natural fondness for freedom and the wild.
