Art house films seem particularly suited for viewing at home on DVD, since they do not have the visual sweep and rich production values of most big-budget studio films. They are small stories, told on an intimate scope, and thus don't lose much when viewed on a relatively smaller screen. And watching at home with friends allows for a more cerebral experience among like-minded people who can talk about the film afterwards over a cup of coffee. Here are some of the best new DVD movie releases from the arthouse.

Mother was one of the most anticipated movies coming soon on DVD due to the buzz it had garnered during its festival run and its limited theatrical release. At present, Mother is one of the most acclaimed of the current movies on DVD. The Korean import is directed by Bong Joon-Ho, one of South Korea's most popular directors, and is about a mother who tries to prove her simple-minded son innocent of a vicious murder. The film won ecstatic praise from critics for its unpredictability and DVD movie reviews followed suit. The most praised extra on the disk was the comprehensive making-of documentary, although there are also features on the director, cinematography, production design and supporting actors; these features are all from the Korean DVD release, but with subtitles. If you get the Blu-Ray edition, you also get a couple of exclusive features, including a look at lead actress Kim Hye-Ja. This is one of the best new DVD movie releases this year.

A Prophet was one of the most acclaimed French films of 2009 and a Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2010 Academy Awards. Understandably, among fans of French and foreign language films, it was one of the most anticipated movies coming soon on DVD. And once DVD mavens read the glowing DVD movie reviews it also became one of the more popular new DVD movie releases. The film, which stars Tahar Rahim and Niels Arestrup, is about a petty crook named Malik, who uses the brutal lessons he learned in prison to develop his own powerful criminal network. Adding to the film's popularity as one of the hottest current movies on DVD are the extras, particularly the audio commentary by director Jacques Audiard, lead actor Tahar Rahim and co-writer Thomas Bidegain, which combines behind-the-scenes stories with social and moral insights.

Triage by acclaimed Bosnian director Danis Tanovic was one of those movies coming soon on DVD that bypassed a theatrical run despite having well-known stars in its cast. Triage stars Colin Farrell as a photojournalist who returns from covering the fighting in Kurdistan traumatized after being separated from a colleague; it also features Paz Vega, Kelly Reilly and Christopher Lee. DVD movie reviews have been generally mixed for the film, one of the lesser-known current movies on DVD although veteran Lee was singled out for his performance. The most praised extras on the disk were the B-roll footage featuring raw footage of scenes shot on location and the making of feature, which includes commentary from the director, producers and actors.
