Do you still remember how you learned how to read? If not, then how will you be able to teach your children some reading techniques? Let's face it, it is not always easy to teach young kids how to begin reading. Most of the time, they would much rather play than learn. However, with a system like Hooked on Phonics, you won't have a problem teaching kids how to read because this actually does the work for you.
Hooked on Phonics is a organized way of teaching kids how to be aware phonetically. This means that the child will learn how to sound off the words, recognize each letter, and putting them all together to form the words. It is an effective method in teaching kids who are just beginning to learn how to read. Using this method will give you child a better understanding how these words are being formed and give them the encouragement they need to read more efficiently. You can begin while your child is in the early childhood stage, somewhere around 4 to 5 years old, teaching him or her techniques that he or she will use for a lifetime.
Here are some instructions to help you implement the program with your own children:
Step 1 – You can begin by starting to learn the letter sounds. This is done by showing your child some flashcards which are included in the kit and play the musical audio simultaneously. When your child starts showing some mastery in sounding of the letters, you may now combine the sounds of these letters to practice reading certain parts of the words. You should entice the kid to read the books and works corresponding to this particular skill set. When time comes that the child is able to fluently combine the letter sounds to form the words and retain this information, it is an indication that the child has mastered the level, signalling him to move on the next.
Step 2 – You are now ready to introduce beginning words sounds and sound combinations. You may ask your child to state the first letter of your name, his or her name and some things around the room. Make sure to use positive reinforcement when he or she does well. This step also involves the use of flashcards and musical audio to help with the learning.
Step 3 – The third level is devoted to teaching the kid ending sounds and other sound combinations. You will also use the flashcards and audios for this one. Other activities that are included are reading stories to help him or her practice the newly formed skills.
Step 4 – Now you may teach the vowel sounds through the flashcards and the instructional audio. You will also use different hands-on activities.
Step 5 – By this stage, the child will have a better recollection of some common words, be able to sound of the letters and use certain patterns to form new words and begin to read much better.
The different steps of Hooked on Phonics help the kids learn in small increments and sustain the learning as well.
