Learning is not always an easy task, especially for children as young as four or five years of age. Children in the early childhood stage often prefer playing over learning and fun over reading. This makes it difficult for the parents to instil the value of reading and learning to their kids. It is a good thing that we now have programs that will help parents encourage their children to read and learn. Hooked on phonics is a another technique to impart the love for reading at such an early age.
It this interests you, then there are a couple of things you need to know about this program:
1. Philosophy – Hooked on Phonics is one of the most systematic ways to teach the letter-sound relationships in words to children. It is a preschool program that begins with establishing phonemic awareness which means that the kids will learn reading through the sounds of the letter. This is like decoding the written word for young children who are just entering into early childhood education. They are taught how to automatically recognize words. As you move further into the program you will then focus on other reading skills.
2. Lessons – The child would definitely not get bombarded with lessons that are too much for him or her to bear. Information is introduced in very small portions to help the child process and remember the things they learned. To make sure the child is learning a certain skill set, children are expected to practice what they've learned through game reinforcements and using the storytelling technique.
3. Skills – There are certain skills being taught in Hooked on Phonics. For one, children will learn more about phonemic awareness. This is the ability to manipulate the sounds in words. The child will learn how to separate each sound of the letter and then put together these letters all together so that the word will clearly register. The next thing that the children will learn is the names of the letters. This is called the alphabetic principle because you teach the kids how the letter looks like and how it sounds. After this, the kids will begin to learn how to decode. This means that they can now look at the combination of letters and be able to sound of the whole word. At this stage, children will also begin to memorize certain common words so that when they read it, they don't always have to sound them off in order to recognize what word is it.
4. Materials – You don't need to hire a teacher. Just pop the CD into your player and you're ready to go. Along with this disk are the flashcards and workbooks to help with the mastery of skills being taught. Other materials include learning charts, incentive charts and stickers.
You can definitely learn while having fun, and you don't have to go through great trouble just to prove this point to your children. It is all a matter of implementing the right program with them, like Hooked on Phonics, so that they won't resent learning and instead embrace it.
