A Few Basic Things about Solar Energy
Solar green energy, or simply solar energy, is basically the light and heat from the sun. Although it is now enjoying greater attention than ever, the quest to harness it began in ancient times. This is not surprising if one considers that it is widely available and free. In fact, it is now known that solar radiation is the largest renewable energy resource available to man. Unfortunately technology has not evolved enough to increase the currently low efficiency of utilization.
Technologies for Capturing Solar Energy
Solar green energy is harnessed by two types of technologies. These technologies are responsible for collecting, converting, storing and distributing solar energy.
- Active technologies generally aim to provide electrical power. They use either photovoltaic panels or thermal collectors. Less visible components of these technologies are pumps and fans. . Photovoltaic panels convert solar energy directly to electricity. Alternatively, solar power collectors concentrate sunlight to heat up a medium, say steam, which is converted by heat engines to mechanical energy used to run generators.
- Passive technologies on the other hand, emphasize direct use of available solar energy. They rely on architectural strategies, and development and selection of materials. Architectural approaches involve orienting a building to minimize lighting or heating requirements. Design stresses the use of spaces to allow natural air flow to distribute heat. Considerations for materials include thermal conductivity, reflectivity and thermal mass.
Applications of Solar Green Energy
At present, solar technology already finds a wide spectrum of markets that can be divided into three: thermal-solar, photovoltaics and small-scale use.
For active technologies, the possibilities are quite diverse and intriguing:
- Solar lighting. This refers to off-grid landscape lights as well as signs and billboards. A small solar power system collects sunlight using photovoltaic panels and stores it in batteries by day. During nighttime or when ambient light drops below a preset limit, the batteries light up the lamps or signs.
- Solar water pumps. These pumps run on power from small solar power systems. Solar water pumps may be surface pumps or submersible pumps. As surface pumps they may be used to deliver water from one location to another. Submersible pumps are deliver water from inside a well or reservoir.
- Space cooling is done by using solar power systems to drive air-conditioners. Solar energy may also be used to assist evaporative coolers. This system is very applicable to homes and other small buildings.
- Flexible solar panels are made by depositing hair-thin layers of silicon on a flexible substrate such as plastic (e.g., polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate). Because of the ease of manufacture of these panels, they are affordable and lightweight. Their capacity limits them to small applications such as charging batteries of handheld devices. More important, these flexible solar panels may be sewn into garments in the future, making wearable solar panels a not-so-distant possibility. Other intriguing future developments are flexible solar panels that can be printed using small printers. Such printable panels could lead to the widespread use of solar panels for the home or small solar power systems.
