Basic Facts
Wind energy is kinetic energy or energy due to motion of air. Wind is the result of uneven heating of the atmosphere and the earth surface by the sun. Hence, wind energy is really a form of solar energy. When wind energy is converted to electricity, this resource is also referred to as wind power.
The technology for harnessing wind energy has evolved for centuries. Early applications included sails for driving boats and ships, wind pumps for pumping irrigation water, and windmills for grinding grains, sawing lumber and performing other tasks in farms. More recently, the wind energy is being redirected to generation of electricity. This is the function of wind turbines.
Pros of Wind Energy
Wind turbines and wind energy have many advantages.
- Wind energy is available in many places all over the globe. It has been reported that in 2009, already 80 countries were using wind power commercially. Among these, Denmark, Portugal, Spain, Ireland and Germany have reported a high penetration, or proportion of wind energy in their total energy production.
- Wind turbines do not release pollutants and can be deployed in large numbers to significantly reduce dependence on fossil fuels in power generation.
- It is a very cheap and indefinitely available resource, because it depends on two ever-abundant and free resources, the air and the sun.
- Even the technology required to harness it is relatively simple and inexpensive. It is estimated that the cost of this technology has decreased by 80% in the last two decades. The technology is also applicable in a wide range of scale from the residential wind turbine to the gigantic wind farm.
- Wind farm sites are a destination for tourists.
- Finally, it has a small requirement for space, allowing agricultural use of the land around individual wind turbine.
The Cons of Wind Energy
Many of the disadvantages of wind energy are not permanent and probably will be overcome by technology or some other strategies:
- Not all places may host wind turbines. Wind farms are usually located in coastlines, hilltops, and other remote areas so that the cost of transmitting power from them is substantial.
- At the present level of technology, a wind speed of at least 10 miles per hour is needed for wind turbines to be practical.
- Another disadvantage is the erratic nature of wind. Its speed depends on location, climate and weather, and even terrain, and it varies from time to time.
- Although they do not release pollutants, wind turbines emit noise which multiplies with turbine size and number.
- They can also be an eyesore for some people.
The Technology of Wind Power: Wind Turbine
Applications of Wind Energy
Some wind turbines harness the energy and transmit this to a mechanism or machine that performs mechanical work. The most common use is pumping water, a necessity in rural areas which are beyond the reach of pumping stations. Other mechanical work include grinding grain and sawing
Most recently, wind energy sees increasing application in power generation. As a result, turbine diameter and power rating of wind turbines have been increasing. In 1981, wind turbines had an average diameter of 10 meters and a rating of 25 kW. By 2000, the diameter and capacity had increased to 71 meters and 1,650 kW, respectively.
