The Chinese calendar is different from the Gregorian calendar. It can be traced back to five hundred years before the coming of Christ. The Gregorian calendar is in general use for marking everyday events that take place, but Chinese dates that are important to the Chinese community are found on a Chinese calendar.
It is a lunisolar calendar in that it tracks the phases of the Moon, and also the Sun. It tracks a tropical year, which is a year that goes from one summer solstice to the next. Its most important purpose is perhaps to chart important festivals and days in a Chinese year.
The start of the year is marked by the Chinese New year. This is a massive holiday which is very important to the Chinese community. It is celebrated on the first day during the first month. Houses are given a very good clean in order to get rid of any lingering bad luck. This also makes a space for all the good luck to come in.
Red paper cut outs of symbols that mean good luck and wealth are used to decorate the windows and doorways. News Years Eve is the time of a big family feast, where any old feuds are mended, and people are forgiven. The evening ends with fire crackers. On New Years day children are given a gift of money in red paper envelopes.
After the harvest has been gathered then it is celebrated with the Mid Autumn festival, which is sometimes called the Moon festival. This is held around September, or October time. The exact day depends on when the moon is at its roundest and brightest.
People celebrate by watching the moon, and also eat moon cakes which are round and sweet. It is also known as the Lantern festival, as many lanterns are lit, including floating ones.
During the winter time then the major celebration is the Dongzhi festival. This takes place on the winter solstice which is the shortest day of the year. Families celebrate by having a large feast.
This festival is thought to have its roots in the yin and yang philosophy of life, in that after this date the days will begin drawing out. With more daylight hours people will experience an increase in energy. Chinese dates mark very important points in the calendar.
