Extend the life of your paint brush
Brushes are some of the most important tools the pet portrait artist will own, their painting style and technique relies on them. High quality brushes can be relatively expensive, so it's beneficial to make sure they're kept in good condition for as long as possible.
Whilst necessary, cleaning is in itself damaging to the brushes so, if an artist wants to take a break, say an hour or two, it's a better idea to simply load the brush with fresh paint and wrap it with cling film. If the brush is going to be left for a few hours or at most overnight, immerse it in a jar of water to exclude the air. However, you'll need to make sure the delicate tips aren't touching the sides of the jar, as it will force the bristles out of shape. This can be simply done by making holes in the lid that are slightly narrower than the widest part of the brush so that it doesn't fall, fill the jar to the top so that it totally covers the bristles when the brushes are in place. It's possible that a few brushes may have a head that is wider than the handle making it difficult to pass through the hole without bending the bristles out of shape. In this instance, use some stiff wire (gardening wire used for supports is ideal), to bend around the handle, holding the brush securely and supporting it in the centre from either edge of the rim. Nonetheless, the brushes shouldn't be left in the water for too long, as it can cause the ferrules to rust and the bristles to swell.
Of course, brushes that have been used for oil painting are generally harder to clean, and almost beyond hope if they're allowed to dry. So make sure that water colour brushes are used for only water colours, the delicate hair used will rapidly deteriorate with the more aggressive cleaning regime for oil paints.
When it gets to the point that you need to clean the brush, remove any excess paint using kitchen paper or newspaper, then immerse the brush in standard white spirit (it's not necessary to use artists quality white spirit) or brush cleaner. Once the remaining paint has been dissolved, wash the brush using with water and detergent and then rinse thoroughly. Before allowing to dry, re-shape the brush head.
