Until the industrial revolution, it was only the aristocracy who can afford to, figuratively and literally, wear jewelry. As a matter of fact, credit for being the first person to popularize wearing charms goes to Queen Victoria, who had a penchant for keepsakes-containing-keepsakes, as made apparent by her keeping her husband's lock of hair, inside a piece of jewelry which is, incidentally, a locket. Her being a fan of charms also encouraged others of her class to wear some too. However, after the rise of the middle class and the working class, spawned by the industrial revolution, these ornate pieces were made more inexpensive. Nowadays, with sterling silver's popularity, silver charms are starting to get a foothold in the jewelry market. And for good reason, silver after all, is way cheaper than white gold or platinum and is just as trendy.
The highest grade of silver is sterling silver, at 92.5%. It is an alloy of silver and another metal, usually copper, as it is said that copper doesn't mess much with the silver's properties. You see, silver in its pure form is not at all good for crafting jewelry because it is malleable. Aside from being used for silver charms, it is also commonly used for high-end utensils.
There are various uses for these charms. They are used as necklace pendants, bag and purse accessories, as well as mobile phone accessories, although it is arguably more popularly used in conjunction with bracelets. There are generally three types of silver charm bracelets - the dangling or link charm bracelets, European charm bracelets such as Pandora, and Italian charm bracelets.
Dangling charm bracelets are precisely that – dangling, and the charms are linked to the bracelet chain via lobster clasps. These clasps are simple but reliable. You won't have a hard time putting the charms on, and you wouldn't have to worry about losing them either. Most charm bracelets that are given as keepsakes are in this form.
European charm bracelets, on the hand, are those that have chains on which you 'string' beads and other charms to form a modular charm bracelet. These make for good accessory pieces because you can easily mix and match to complement your outfit, granting that you have a good collection of charms and beads.
Italian Charm bracelets are the last category and they are steadily gaining followers, despite its being relatively new to the scene (it was introduced around 2001). With these bracelets, charms are sort of snapped on to the silver starter band, letting you choose charms and pieces depending on your style or your mood. Unlike the previous two, these bracelets sit flat on the wrist.
With silver charms, you can look trendy, or classy, and aren't likely to make you look over-the-top. This high degree of wear-ability makes them ideal gifts. Another thing is that not only are you assured that whoever receives them will find an occasion to wear one but also because these charms are personal gifts and you can be sure it is something that your favorite person will remember you by.
