It is a belief of some people that the word 'charm' is derived from the Latin word 'carmen'. It is a song of incantation, which can be regarded as a euphemism for a magic spell. Today, not a lot of people believe in sorcery; at least not as much as before. But let's face it, charms do have their magic. Think of the pleasant memories the trinkets are likely to bring to mind whenever you pause and stare at them, or when they dangle on your wrists while you push the groceries cart, or when someone asks you about where you got them, or who gave them.
Charms in History
Charms have gone, and still go by other names - totems, amulets, talismans, etc. They have been around for at least 75, 000 years. The first charms were just shells used as accessories by people from Africa. Animal bones, tusks, and clay were also used in making charms. They may not be much, compared to today's Italian charms, and sterling silver bands, but, they did give whoever wears them a certain degree of comfort, if not pleasure. Charms were, after all, believed to be a necessity in warding off evil, for good harvest, for fertility or what-not.
Wearing charms have also been, for some people, a major part of culture as they are used for courtship and marriage rituals, as well as in showing religious affinity (such as the Christians' discreet wearing of tiny fish charms when they were persecuted by the Romans, to identify themselves as such to fellow Christians). People became more adept in crafting charms and jewelry during the Bronze Age, with the introduction of semi precious stones and the discovery of various minerals.
Charms in Modern Times
It is believed that Queen Victoria was the one who popularized the use of charms as they are – as a statement. She wore lockets with pictures of family members and even went as far as wearing one with her husband's strand of hair in it, or so, the story goes. After that, it became fashionable to wear something with meaning, and what better way to evoke meaning than wearing something that would be a symbol of sorts, be it of affection, of mood, or of personality.
During the industrial revolution, precious metals were made more affordable to the middleclass and the working class; and even more people started wearing them. However, it isn't until after World War II that they have really penetrated society as mainstays in the great-gift-ideas list. Enlisted people brought trinkets from all over the world as presents for loved ones – girlfriends, mothers, and sisters.
Now, we are well into the 2000s, and charms are alongside the ranks of Boho-chic and bling-bling as fashion must-haves. They are either used as pendants or as charm bracelets - a lot of these accessories are even used for mobile phones and bags.
Indeed, charms have come a long way from makeshift clay adornments, as they now come in gold and sterling silver and are sometimes embellished with precious gems. With the way they could let you express yourself and at times, wear your heart, only on the wrist, it can be safely said that they are without a doubt here to stay.
