Photovoltaic or PV panels, also known as solar panels, are devices which catch energy from the sun and convert it into usable form of electricity. With the advantages provided by PV systems, it is no wonder how such technology continues to expand in application and capabilities. Although solar panels are used in several gadgets nowadays such as calculators, lamps, vehicles, mobile phones, the most efficient use is as part of the electrical system of homes as well as business establishments.
However, skeptics of such technology have their set of doubts to counter the advantages of using solar PV panels. The following are the commonly founded loopholes of the PV system:
1. Cost. Although, it is true that in the long run, solar panels will allow you to save on the cost of electricity, there is also an argument that it will take a long time for you to save on your electricity bill with the high cost of installation. Pro-solar energy experts provide a solution to this loophole. According to them, there are several methods of how you can have a home solar panel installed at a fraction of the cost. One option is to lease solar panels instead of buying them. Also, if you are not comfortable with renting your panels, you can look into finding chipped and used types which costs less than the new ones. Another option is to make do without the help of commercial installation companies and to embark in a do it yourself project. However, if you want to ascertain the quality of job done and feel you will not successfully complete the project, you can save on the cost by purchasing the more affordable type of solar panels such as the amorphous type.
2. Maintenance. With the complexity of the technology, the common notion is that the cost of maintenance is also very high. However, recent advancements have found a way for solar panels to reduce on the cost of maintenance by protecting the system from storms and the onslaught of moisture which greatly corrodes the metal.
3. Selectivity in installment. There is also the problem raised that because of the rigid nature of the material of which solar panels are made of, finding the right location of installation can be a drawback. However, the newer types of solar panels such as the amorphous type are thinly made and are quite flexible so that installation is not anymore a problem. The trick is finding the right location for it to harvest the maximum amount of sunlight.
4. Selectivity. The most obvious problem of the PV system which hinders people from getting their very own is that after daylight, harvesting of energy from the sun is not anymore possible. Although, this argument is well-founded, common systems are equipped with batteries that store the excess energy obtained from the sun for use during night time. With more efficient types of batteries being made, the problem of selectivity will be reduced. It will just be matter of time before the technology of PV panels will be perfected.
