Kitchen cabinetry varies according to the materials used, the construction and the design concepts. The most commonly-used material is wood, or some variation of it, such as plywood or particle boards. However, the rise of modern cabinetry introduced the use of stainless steel, which has its perks as well. With the plethora of choices and design concepts in cabinetry, taking a closer look at such is definitely a wise move.

The usual designs for kitchen cabinetry vary from antique and country to contemporary. Traditional, or antique, cabinetry is classy and oftentimes dramatic. Authentic antique cabinets can be very expensive though (think Sotheby caliber), that's why some people opt to give their cabinetry an antique look instead by installing moldings, intricately carved details, and applying a darker finish. Antique or traditional cabinetry should have that dark look down pat anyway. Materials used for antique cabinetry are wood (usually cherry, maple or oak) and brass or copper. This kind of cabinetry are more formal, which, while being elegant, can look quite stiff.

Contemporary or modern kitchen cabinets, on the other hand, lack the curves and intricate details that are characteristic of traditional designs. They come with sleek, clean lines and the cabinet doors are usually frameless, providing for easy-access to cabinet space. They are usually compact and are low-maintenance as well, since the door handles, and the door itself rarely have carving details and the likes. These types of cabinet sets are also great space savers as they might have pull-out shelves, and other cabinet 'organizers'. Materials utilized for contemporary or modern cabinetry are wood, stainless steel, glass and plastic.

Now if you want to retain the traditional look and do away with the formal style at the same time, you can go for the country kitchen design. Cabinetry for country kitchen has that natural look; they make for cozy kitchen areas, thanks to the warm tone of the woods used. They are usually created from oak and cherry wood that are painted or stained. They have the 'aged' look but the intricate moldings and carve-work are done away with.

A few things to keep in mind: you might have to choose the texture. You also need to think about color coordination and staying close to the theme of your house as a whole. For example, if your house has a modern minimalistic design, you should go for contemporary cabinetry. You should also care to avoid too much color. Remember that cabinetry will be there for some time. If you intend to use color to keep with the trends, try to limit it to anything other than kitchen cabinetry. If you want color, you can always add plants, or paintings apt for kitchen areas. You don't need to be a hardcore interior design enthusiast to come up with a nice-looking kitchen; all you need is a little research, and a little taste for what looks 'right', by every sense of the word.
