For many owners, hermit crab breeding can be a large endeavor. They are exceptionally hard because they are in captivity; there aren't many cases where they are known to breed successfully in captivity. You have to give them all that they need as if they were in their natural habitat. It isn't enough that you put them in a tank with some water and a place for them to surface; there are a lot more you need to consider if you want your hermits to get in the mood.
But the most important thing in breeding hermit crabs is to of course have a male and a female crab. But how can you tell which is which? Normally you can tell the male crab by the size of their pincers or claws. Males generally have larger claws than females. Males are also more vibrantly colored; this is so they can attract female hermit crabs. The hermit crab shells with the most number of embellishments also belong to the males.
Now if you're really up for the challenge of breeding hermit crabs, the following pointers might be of some use to you. Your goal is to create a hermit crab habitat that is so close to the real thing that your crabs will be comfortable enough to mate.
- The first thing you should do is to prepare your saltwater tank. Of course you should know that hermit crabs are aquatic animals, meaning they thrive in saltwater. It is therefore necessary to prepare a saltwater tank for them to mate in. some owners even use an outdoor pool to make their habitat mimic their real environment.
- Next you should keep a close eye on the water temperature. The temperature of the tank water should ideally be between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, too warm or too cold and the hermit crabs may not mate at all because they aren't comfortable with the water.
- If you can, make artificial waves. An artificial wave machine will probably be best. In the wild the waves signal the female crab as to where she should lay her eggs.
- Consider using artificial moonlight. The full moon influences the mating behavior of all crabs. The females usually become fertile at the time of the month where there is a full moon. And being nocturnal animals, the artificial moonlight will also help the crabs move about freely.
- And lastly, have your crabs become familiar with each other. Get the male and female crab together in one cage. Do not worry if they don't start mating right off the bat. It is at night time where they will be more active, and it is during this time that they would most likely mate.
The success of your hermit crabs mating depends largely on how close to the real thing you can get your hermit crab habitat to be. Copying most of what is present in the wild is important to get your crabs comfortable enough to breed on their own.
