Often, people choose hermit crabs as pets over dogs or cats—because they cause less trouble in keeping. You will never have to chase them, they are not picky with food and they will not cause damage to your furniture. They are safely confined and very unlikely to be hit by the car. However, most hermit crab species have a lifespan of less than a year. If you want them to live longer, you must be sensitive to their needs.
The glass tank will be the hermit crab habitat inside your house, so you must always keep it clean. You must also ensure that the cage's condition is always fit for holding the essential needs of your crab pets: humidity, warmth and fresh water. It is recommended to perform a total tank clean-up once every month.
The first step is to transfer the crabs to a temporary container. You can use a plastic bowl to hold them for a couple of cleaning hours. Just be sure that they have no means of climbing up. Then, you can start removing the toys and accessories in your crabby cage. Scoop up the sand and empty the glass tank.
If you plan on reusing the sand, you may want to use fishnet to sift the remaining waste materials. You can also sterilize the sand by washing it, and baking it in the oven at 350 degrees. Baking will kill the insects in the substrate, and it will improve the grains' texture.
Cleaning of the crab's fecal matter is easy and cheap. You will just need a rag and a diluted solution of vinegar in water. Their feces do not cause any strong odor, and the vinegar solution can remove the tiny traces of pungent scent. Do not use soaps and strongly acidic formulas in cleaning the walls. After cleaning the floor and walls of the tank, you may fill it again with sand. Make the hermit crab habitat substrate at least 2 inches deep to allow burrowing.
Feeding a hermit crab with commercial feeds may also cause the appearance of a green substance at their water tray. You can use soap in cleaning it but rinse it thoroughly. Refill the water trays with purified or distilled water. If you will use tap water, apply a few drops of conditioner to neutralize the chlorine content. Also wash the toys before returning them to the tank.
Position the toys like building a playground for kids. This will serve as exercise grounds for your pet crabs. Exploring and climbing will make them stronger and fitter. It is also recommended to provide them with clean empty shells—with various size and shapes. They will soon outgrow their present shells, and they will need new ones for protection.
After returning the accessories, you can now check and reinstall the temperature and humidity controls of the hermit crab habitat. Make sure that the heating stone is working. The crabs are comfortable at tropical temperatures—at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Replace the damp sponge with a new one, to keep a fresh but moist atmosphere in the tank. Reusing moist sponge may encourage the growth of unwanted bacteria.
