People who love crabs (as pets, not food) have a lot of species of hermit crabs to choose from. Each of them has physical traits that are different from each other. But among all of them there are 10 species that are most craved for as pets. These are:
1. Coenobita brevimanus- This is the second largest species of hermit crab in the world. They are found mostly along the western coasts of the Pacific. Their purplish color and blue-green eyes is what makes it appealing to many crab lovers.
2. Coenobita cavipes- This species are native to Asian and African rainforests. An interesting fact about these bright orange crabs is that they never go to the shore unless it's mating season. These crabs also change its shell more often than the other species so it's best to keep a lot of hermit crab shells around for its shelter.
3. Coenobita clypeatus- commonly known by the name Caribbean hermit crab, they live in and along Caribbean waters. This is the most common hermit crab that is kept as pets as they are known to live up to 40 years or more.
4. Coenobita compressus- also known as the Ecuadorian hermit crab, these are the smallest among the other species and also the quickest among them so you must be wary of them as they will try to escape.
5. Coenobita perlatus- this species is one that is not readily available anywhere, only in some parts of Australia. These are also known as strawberry crabs because their bodies are red in color with white spots that resembling a strawberry. These are also a tough species of crab, as they have a lifespan of 32 years.
6. Coenobita rugosus- these crabs make a sound similar to chirping birds by rubbing their pincers along their shell. These come in a variety of different colors ranging from black, green, and even pink; there are also some that have two shades of colors.
7. Paguristes pugil- or boxer hermit crab, is a beautiful crab that looks somewhat like a snail. This appearance of theirs is what makes them appealing to most pet owners.
8. Paguristes frontalis- these are the most common of all the hermit crabs in the list. These crabs are scavengers and thus prefer dead animals and fish as food as they cannot catch live prey.
9. Cancellus typus- also called the miner hermit crab, these are on the endangered species list and as such it is not always possible to keep them as pets. These are the only known species of hermit crab that make their shells out of stones and pebbles cemented together by an excretion that it makes from its body.
10. Strigopagurus elongates- more commonly known as the stridulating hermit crab. This large crab has rows of yellow plates running down the sides of its body and its claws. These are commonly found along Australian coastlines.
If you're interested in keeping a pet land hermit crab, then choose from the ones in this list. You might be surprised in how much fun you'll get from these unusual pets.
