What comes first in your mind when you hear exotic pets? You would probably think wild tigers, monkeys, or a unusual lizard from some far away land. Only a few people will think of hermit crabs as pets, let alone exotic pets, but these individuals do enjoy the unique satisfaction of having a hermit crab as a pet. Hearing this, you probably want to keep one or two crabs for your own and join this steadily growing community of crab owners. But the problem is that you don't know how to go about taking care of hermit crabs. The biggest problem is where would you house your hermit crabs? Being an unusual pet choice, there isn't much readily available information out there on how to construct a hermit crab habitat, unlike kennels, aquariums, etc.
In recreating a seemingly natural environment for your hermit crabs you must first study their wild habitat so you can get most of the details right. One of the biggest factors you should consider is the humidity level. Because they come from tropical countries and live close to the sea, their bodies have learned to adjust to high levels of humidity. This is important because the crabs will rely on the humidity of the air so they can keep their gills moist so they can survive even out of the water.
You might be a bit scared at the thought of creating a hermit crab habitat from scratch, thinking that it may take a lot of work and that you're not particularly confident with your handiwork. It need not be too hard, you don't need to imitate exactly what's in the natural environment of hermit crabs, just take note of what they need in order to survive and not forget to include them in the habitat.
You must also take into consideration their behavior when building an artificial environment for them. They like to bury themselves in the sand; in fact that is where they spend most of their time in. so make sure that you put in loose sand in the habitat that they can burrow in. And there should also be a pool of sea water they can get into from time to time; they are sea creatures after all. And about what do hermit crabs eat? Fruits and vegetables are fine, but feed them some meat or fish in there from time to time.
And despite being called "hermits", hermit crabs are highly social creatures they actually thrive best when kept with other hermit crabs. So keeping more than one crab is a good idea, but don't expect to see little a baby hermit any time soon, hermit crab breeding in captivity is quite difficult.
These are just a few of the more obvious things you need to know about your hermit crabs. If you wish to know a little more hermit crabs information it would be best to consult with other people who have these wonderful crustaceans as pets.
