Summer in Newmarket runs from mid June to late August. In those few weeks they manage to pack in a full racing schedule, a set of summer concerts, the July Festival and hold the fun-packed Summer Saturdays every week.
The July Course is the venue for all the action through the summer calendar. Located alongside the National Stud on the approach to the town the July Course is the epitome of traditional racing and the perfect setting for a day out with family or friends.
With ticket prices starting from £5 for adults and free entrance for children under 18, Summer Saturdays are a great value day out with a difference.
August bank holiday weekend has a little something extra to offer.
Following the success of its introduction in 2009, Seniors' Day is back on Friday 27th August. The racing gets underway at 2.20pm with The EBF Fillies Maiden Stakes. Senior Citizens will be granted free admission (proof of age may be required) to the Grandstand and paddock at the July Course where they can enjoy all the afternoons racing action. The race programme runs through until 5.10pm when the last race of the day is run.
Saturday 28th August has 8 thrilling races on the card, the first of which sets off at 1.50pm. The afternoons, and in fact the summer season's, racing concludes after the last of the official thoroughbred races, with the Town Plate which is scheduled for a 5.40pm start. First run in 1665, Charles II had it decreed in an Act of Parliament that this race be held 'forever'. 2010 sees the Town Plate being contested for the 341st time. This historic event was the first of its kind to be held under written rules at the Newmarket racecourse. The rules dictate that all the horses that line up for this three-and-three-quarter mile event be ridden by amateurs. Do not be fooled though, this is a highly competitive race taken very seriously by those who enter. Starting on the National Stud, the race then joins the July Course at the two-mile start and concludes at the track's usual finishing line.
All the Summer Saturdays include some extra entertainment. There is a Punch & Judy Show for audiences old and young and giant inflatables in the Garden Enclosure for the children to explore. The permanent children's playground will also be open to all racegoers and all the attractions are all free to use.
Summer Saturday Racegoer packages are available to buy in advance and will make your day at the races even better value. For the price of your ticket you will get admission to the Grandstand and Paddock, a racecard and something to eat or drink. These packages are on offer from £22 per person and will definitely save you some money on the day. These can also be purchased to use on Friday 27th August,
The July Racecourse is a spectacular summer venue for both racing and relaxing. The recent £10 million enlargement and development has transformed into a state of the art facility that has everything the modern racing fan could need. That said the course has retained all of the beauty and majesty that has made it one of the finest venues in the world for summer horseracing.
