If you own a horse, one of the things you want to do is to jump with your horse. Of course you wouldn't want to use your house's fence for this activity hoping it wouldn't destroy your fence. If you want to train your horse to jump for show jumps, what you need to have are horse jumps. These equipment are fence-like structures with horizontal poles, usually used for horse races. Professional equestrians also use these to train their horses. There are many types of jump equipments you can use depending on the horse's skills. But if you're just starting out, begin with the simplest ones.
There are a lot of brands you can find in the market, however, they are usually expensive. To cut costs, why not build it on your own. If you know how to make some easy building techniques, making horse jumps would not be hard. Figure what type of horse jumping equipment you want to build. You can even make one for cross country jumps or other types of show jumps. All you have to buy are a pair of jump cups, a drill, a screwdriver, a saw and an eight-foot long 4x4 wood and another eight-foot long 1x4 wood. You can actually save a lot more by creating a simple one than purchasing the professional-made jumps. You can buy these items at any building stores and it wouldn't cost you much. After all, its purpose is basically the same, to train your horse jumping.
Once you have all the materials ready, the first thing you need to form is the base. Your base should be sturdy to stand but should also easily come down when your horse trips on it. This is important for your horse to avoid any injuries. You can improvise your base with some other materials but you can usually use 1 X 4 diameter piece of wood with it. Once you have made two bases with equal length, attach the two 4x4 pieces of wood angled 90 degrees to the base using a screw. This will be your jump wings. After you have set that up, you can now place the jumping poles. For a beginner horse, just setup low poles so it can start with the most basic, before trying to train it with higher jumps. Add the jump cups at the vertical poles, this will be the support of your horizontal poles. You can also try to put a cross rail jumps to your poles. These are poles that intersect in the mid-section of the horse jumps to help train your horse jump at the center of the equipment.
Once you have successfully built your own jumping equipment for your horse, you can now have the option of painting it for aesthetic purposes.
You see, if you have a horse at home, having inexpensive horse jumps is really helpful. Once your horse already has the basic jumping skills, you can now start teaching it higher jumps, by adjusting the jump caps and the poles. In no time, you can already start joining show jump competitions, who knows you can be one of the best equestrians after all.
