Traditionally, decking is constructed with timber; and with good reason. After all, it is one way of creating an extension from your house to the outdoors to somehow get closer to nature; what better way is there other than using materials that would look natural as well? Cedar and Redwood are popular choices in the Native trees category and pressure treated wood also has quite a following, what with its budget-friendly cost. Alas, wood requires relatively higher maintenance and while some types, such as Cedar and Redwood, are rot-resistant, they are not entirely rot-proof. This means you will need to do a whole lot of staining, sanding, cleaning or applying sealant. A good alternative to this would be an installation of one using composite decking materials.
Composite materials are, from the word suggests, a combination of materials – synthetic and organic. Organic materials include wood industry by-products such as saw dust. The synthetic material used is plastic. Plastic, when bound to wood fibers, protects it from moisture. With that, rot is avoided. They are also relatively low maintenance because you don't have to apply sealant and wood stains. First-generation composite materials, that is, the ones that were introduced to the market way back, had problems with molds and mildew, as well as staining, but that has since been resolved in the second-generation materials. For example, antimicrobial elements were added, to stop molds from thriving. UV inhibitors were also added to make the woods more resistant to fading due to sun exposure. Composite decking materials are getting more and more wood-like, and therefore, more natural-looking, these days, making them one ultra viable alternative.
What's even better is that it is practically free of splinters. And if you are pro-environment, you'd appreciate the fact that this product used recycled materials – the mentioned wood industry by products. They are also cheaper than most Native hardwood decking material, but are more expensive than pressure-treated lumber. Another problem that you might bump into is that while most of these have matching systems for railing and trimming, that is not always the case. So, make sure to inquire about this when you are talking to your decking installer or material supplier.
Before you begin installation, you'll have to find out if the decking code is approved in your area. There are several composite decking materials that may not have ICC (International Code Council) approval. After all, some are made of plastic that can be a waste disposal problem. You also have to look up the warranty policy. Some companies offer a 10-year warranty for the materials, with others offering 'lifetime' (25 – 50 years) warranty. If you want to do a little cost-cutting, you may use pressure-treated wood for the frames instead. After all, you'd have to use real wood anyway, as most composite materials couldn't be used for that.
Composite materials are the way to go if you want low-maintenance decking. It may not always look as real as, well, real wood, but there are some that can pass for one. But whatever decision process you might be engaged in right now; the sooner you decide, the better. You may not need your very own serenity spot right away, but, with the way things can get so stressful these days, you will surely want one soon.
