A deck is basically an elevated floor extension that connects from the interior of the house to the exterior of the house. Decks are made to cover the ground which has too many rough pebbles that may be too uncomfortable to walk on. Basically a deck is an outdoor flooring. In residential homes, decks stretch up from the terrace of a house to the outside patio. However other uses of decks are found in seaside locations, where decks can be used to cover sand and pebbles which may be hard to walk on. In buildings, decks can be found in the roof top where people can gather to observe. Decking has many uses not only to provide outdoor floor to walk on but decking these days may also refer to the deck itself and the covering or roof or canopy for which to cover the decking. Many households have decks with tables and chairs to complete an Al fresco dining theme.
Materials used for decking is usually made of wood. Naturally, wood was the first material used for decking . One of the widely used wood for decking are softwood such as cedar. Before long, Western redwoods have become popular decking material. Wood that are used for decking are also treated with chemicals to become stronger. Such wood that are used for decking are pine trees and mahogany. But because of conservation, wood have become more and more costly. Plus, chemically treated wood used for decking are also believed to be poisonous. With the advent of technology , there are now plastic, PVC and composite materials which can be used for decking. Nowadays it is very common to find decking which is composed of composite materials or those materials of wood and plastic. Composite decking can provide the beauty and sophistication of wood, but with the durability of plastic. Plastic is immune to parasites that is why it is also a desirable material for decking. There are also other decking structures which are made purely of plastic or PVC. Synthetic materials for decking provide durable and low maintenance decks which can even be more affordable compared to wood. But even with the advent of other synthetics, people still revere wood for decking purposes. The main reason is aesthetics. In fact, synthetic material such as composites, plastic and PVC are physically painted and designed to look as if they are natural wood.
For other types of decks such as roof decks, observation decks, verandas and patios, other materials can be used in place of wood. In fact, other types of decking may require very easy installation. Using wood for decking may require construction by using hammer, saw and nails. But today there are decks which can only be assembled easily. Whatever material you choose for your decking, make sure to choose the durable option. It will be of great inconvenience to reassemble or to renovate your deck. Prioritize durability above aesthetics because decks are usually located outside, they have to be strong to be able to survive rough conditions.
