Lucky are the people who have houses with patios built during its construction. For some who are just beginning to appreciate the benefits of one, fret not; as getting outdoor decking installed these days is not as difficult as it was several years ago. It is pretty much like patio, only, while the latter is usually made of stone or concrete, the former is an elevated surface that is capable of supporting weight -- those of people, pets and furniture. It is usually connected to the house itself.
If you are looking to install decking for your home, it does count to be well aware of your options, and the things that you have to consider before setting it up. One of the key considerations you'd have to think about would be about the type of materials that would be used for the construction of the project. Materials used for decking construction projects include native wood, tropical hardwood, composite materials, plastic lumbers and various other materials such as aluminum and fiberglass.
Native wood decking, as the name suggests, are made from trees that grows in the continental US, such as cedar and redwood. And you know how awesome cedar and redwood looks like, especially when they are beautifully finished. This kind of wood is naturally resistant to rot and insects. Pressure-treated lumber can also be made out of these trees. A major downside is that it may warp if it isn't kiln-dried. The tropical hardwood group includes trees such as teak. These types of woods are almost splinter-free. A disadvantage would be that decking made from any type wood would require relatively more maintenance such as regular application of stain or sealants.
Plastic, composite, aluminum and fiberglass are what most people refer to as the "alternative decking materials" category. They are typically more cost-effective because of the longer life-span and its being virtually splinter-free and low-maintenance. Yet another brownie point for materials in this group is that there are some, particularly hollow PVC, that has good value for money, although other material such as aluminum, composite and solid PVC can be more expensive.
Composite decking materials are made from wood fiber or wood flour, with binders and fillers added, and in most cases, plastic, particularly polyethylene. Composite materials can be more expensive than pressure-treated lumber but they are low-maintenance and are totally free from rot-and-decay. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) decking contains no wood filling at all and are therefore entirely made from, well, PVC and additives other than wood. Hollow PVC doesn't really look like wood though. However, there are solid PVC decking materials that look (almost) like the real thing. Fiberglass is usually installed for commercial structures and aluminum is generally for watertight construction projects although vinyl or PVC may also be used for the latter.
You see, there are practically dozens of options for you; that finding one that would suit your budget and your lifestyle should be easy. Note that some are constructed from materials that need petroleum for its production, and that they are rather bulky (and there needs to be fuel for shipping as well). They aren't like most electronics that get cheaper by the hour. So if you believe that decking would make a great addition to your home, it's about time you have one installed now.
