The wheelbarrow has become a crucial tool in a number of industries. Mining, agriculture, construction, and gardening are some of the areas where a wheelbarrow is used, with minor modifications - in terms of the shape of the tray, the placing and number of wheelbarrow wheels and the handles – to meet the needs of each.
The history of the wheelbarrow is somewhat unclear. Most resources point to China as the place where this tool was first invented and used. However, several studies have emerged that pinpoint Ancient Greece as its birthplace. According to records found around 400 BC, a prototype of the modern wheelbarrow – the kind that has one and not two wheelbarrow wheels - was used as equipment for construction in Ancient Greece. This industrial knowledge was adopted by the conquering Romans, as evidenced by a description of a one-wheeled implement used to carry light loads around 400 AD. Unfortunately, the paper trail stops here: the journey of the wheelbarrow in the pages of European history abruptly ended with the time of the Roman Empire. The next emergence of a similar apparatus in Europe was recorded almost a thousand years later during the Middle Ages.
Often assumed as the inventors of the humble wheelbarrow, the Chinese seemed to have a different idea on where to employ the device. Whereas in Europe it was often used as a type of construction equipment, in China it was used to carry and transport loads not limited to wood and stone, and other construction materials. The earliest records of wheelbarrow use in this country were composed of stories that were rumored to have taken place around the 1st century and depicted disguised emperors using the implement to transport load. During the 2nd century, however, people began using the wheelbarrow to transport various types of load, ranging from building materials for tombs to provisions for the military for use in warfare. The evolution of the wheelbarrow continued, to the extent that it has become a large contraption used as a means of transportation.
The mentioned differences in wheelbarrow use in history have led to modifications in its very structure, particularly in terms of the wheelbarrow wheels. Since its use in Europe was severely limited, its configuration barely changed; in fact, it was very similar to the garden wheelbarrows found in most homes today, minus modern innovations such as puncture proof tyres, of course. Much of the modifications happened in China, what with the numerous uses the Chinese found for the device. In terms of size, for instance, by the late 18th century large "wheelbarrows" that served as carriages for people and used for carrying heavier loads were all over the country. Wheelbarrow tyres too, were tailored according to use. For lighter loads, the front-wheel arrangement that was and is popular in Europe sufficed; however, when heavier weights were being transported, the wheels were placed at the center of the wheelbarrow tray. Such an arrangement allowed for the transportation of much heavier pieces.
