A wheelbarrow is a lever. This means that it is used to exponentially increase the force exerted upon an object; or, in simpler terms, it helps you carry things that you are otherwise unable to carry on your own. Garden wheelbarrows have three basic parts: the tub (or basin or tray, whichever you prefer), the handle or handles (which you use to either push or pull the device), and the wheels (which are obviously there to help you move the load from one point to another). When purchasing a wheelbarrow, it is not only the function that matters; you should also be particular with what you are looking for with regard to its parts. This is because if you go to a hardware shop unprepared, being bombarded with questions pertaining to size, depth of the tub, kind of wheelbarrow wheels, and the like will most likely leave you bewildered – which will ultimately lead to not being able to buy a wheelbarrow at all.
Questions regarding the tub and the handles, and the overall size of the wheelbarrow are easy enough to address. It is the issue of what wheelbarrow wheels to choose that requires a bit of background information. The first thing you should know about in relation to wheelbarrow tyres is that wheelbarrows often come with either one or two wheels. A single-wheeled wheelbarrow is ideal if, based on the make-up of your garden, it is likely that you will encounter sharp turns and tread on narrow pathways. A two-wheeled device, on the other hand, is preferable if you will be transporting heavy loads, since it is sturdier. Single-wheeled wheelbarrows are more usual, and although they are more likely to topple, they are preferred by more gardeners compared to the two-wheeled ones.
Wheelbarrow wheels can come in the form of solid or pneumatic tires. Solid wheelbarrow wheels are often cast from molds and are made from rubber or plastic. Due to their non-hollow nature, they are usually heavier than pneumatic tires. As much as possible, then, their use as wheelbarrow wheels should be limited; that is, only use them when you are certain that the device will not traverse your lawn. Pneumatic tires are essentially hollow. Typically, they have an internal tube that is filled with pressurized air. Tires of this type are more advisable since they are lighter, and will not damage your lawn as much as solid tires will. A minor problem usually encountered by users of this type, though, is the regular need for inflation of the tire. Recently, though, advancement in the manufacturing of pneumatic tires has managed to address this minor problem by coming up with semi-pneumatic, tubeless, and even puncture proof tyres. Semi-pneumatic tires are the most popular among the three, especially as wheelbarrow tires. This is because they combine the advantage of being puncture-resistant of solid tires, with the lightness of pneumatic wheels.
