Horses can do a lot of things. They can walk, run, trot, canter, and jump. And for most horses, the scariest and most difficult thing to do is to jump. If you think jumping is very easy, think again. You have to know that horse jumps are quite different from the jumps that you know. Aside from the regular jumps, horses also have special kinds of jumps that they do in horse shows and contests. It is not as simple as lifting their feet and body up in the air. You have to learn a lot more about jumps for horses.
Whether you are a horse trainer or a horse owner, it is important that you know how to handle your horse. You and your pet equine should have a god relationship that will make the training seem very easy for both you and the horse. If the master treats his horse well, the horse will be as gentle and mild as a lamb. On the other hand, a mistreated horse will grow up to be ill-tempered and bad-mannered. You should understand horses before you even think about teaching them how to perform tricks.
There are different kinds of horse jumps. If you like watching horse shows and competitions, you have probably seen horses jumping gracefully over obstacles. These jumps have technical names. And it is important that you know these names and how they are done if you want to be a good and successful trainer and horseman. Read the list below to know more about the different types of jumps for horses.
- Show Jumps. These jumps are performed in horse shows and there are different categories under this type, namely; vertical, oxer or spread, hog's back, and wall jumps. The vertical jump is probably the simplest jump because it uses only one kind of poles which requires the horse to jump vertically. This is also called a high jump. Oxer or spread jump is also called a long jump. It is like jumping over two vertical jumps that are positioned right next to each other, adding width to the jump. Hog's back is difficult because the poles have uneven heights and the tallest one is at the middle. Wall jumps can also be intimidating because the obstacle looks very solid. It is made up of bricks that resemble a solid wall.
- Cross Country Jumps. These are jumps that look as if they are being done in the countryside because of the types of obstacles used. The horses have to jump over logs, ruts, and ditches, just like what you see when you travel in the countryside. The obstacles are made to look very natural and rustic. Logs are set up in different angles and ditches are dug on the road. This is probably done to make the horse feel comfortable, as if it is in its natural habitat or surroundings, even if it is actually in a horse show with a lot of spectators.
- Water Jumps. As the name suggests, these horse jumps include water in the obstacle. A water ditch is dug on both sides of the jump to add excitement and difficulty to the sport.
