Watching competitions, you might see how challenging horse jumps are. Though all horses have the skills in jumping, not every one of them will be willing to follow its rider and perform in the caliber of champions. If you are interested in trying out show jumps or other obstacles, you should know how to train your mount first .
Even if you are one of the lucky ones who will manage to get an experienced horse, you still have to teach the animal how to be in tune with your movements and commands. A green horse is more challenging yet a clean slate offers a chance to train a horse that would grow up to be the best.
When training an inexperienced mount in horse jumps, here are some basic tips that you must always remember:
- When you are just starting out, the proper thing to do is to keep things slow and simple at first. This will give your horse a chance to learn the basics of the sport. Pushing your horse too much when it doesn't have the experience would potentially injure your horse or you as the rider as well . Don't worry because you can increase the height of the jump once your horse's skills would be better.
- Even for horses, fences can be a little menacing. Give your mount a chance to gain confidence of its own ability to conquer the obstacles. Pushing a horse that doesn't believe its own capabilities would only increase its fear of the obstacles along the way. This is especially true in cross country jumps where the obstacles can be anything from the usual fence to ponds.
- Make training fun. Horses might be animals but if they are conditioned to think that what they are doing is fun, they would be more enthusiastic and they also wouldn't refuse too much. In competitions, refusals can cause penalty points. As much as possible, you don't want your mount to feel that they have a choice whether they should jump or not.
- Don't forget to always review the basics with your horse. Reviews of the basics should be done at the start of your training session. A lot of mounts are unsuccessful because they were unaccustomed of doing the basics of the sport. By doing it constantly, you are making it a habit for them. Pretty soon, you don't have to worry about this because it will be ingrained to their minds.
- Have a progressive training plan. Avoid using a monotonous routine but you should make that plan that moves forward as well. The best way to go is to give your horse a chance to learn something new. Just make sure that you review what it has learned on previous training before because you don't want your horse to forget what it has learned.
- Teach your horse how to trot before any horse jumps. These events would usually be stressful for green horses because they will be anticipating the obstacle. If you are going to teach your mount to trot, you are teaching it to calm down. The calmer the mount is, the smoother the jump will be.
