Horse rugs are for you horse but if your pet seems grumpy │ irritable when you put one on, you better take a closer look. There may be some soreness or rub somewhere there.
When your galloping friend develops some rug sores, the fastest │ best way to get rid of them is to take a pass on making it wear any clothing. However, since there are times when doing so isn't practical, you have to look for other ways to address the problem.
Oftentimes, the sores are caused by ill-fitting rugs. When your pet moves around, a piece of clothing which doesn't sufficiently │amply fit would slip through his or her withers and cause friction along the shoulders and the chest. You would probably not realize there's something wrong with the rug until your horse's hair start to become patchy, or worse, they start to fall out. These patchy areas │ spots develop sores and can be very uncomfortable, if not painful. Untreated sores can develop infection and may bother │ vex your horse even more.
Stable rugs and outdoor rugs which are either too tight or too loose are bad. Loose clothing may seem │ appear ok because it looks comfortable but it can actually get twisted around your pet's body and cause him or her to panic, entangle his or her legs, or eventually get him or her injured. To prevent this from happening, only make your horse wear a perfect fit.
If you find out that your horse's current clothing does not fit well, you should make him or her use a different piece. It would be wise │sensible to measure your horse every two months especially during the winter when his or her weight is likely to fluctuate │ alter. When the measurement changes, make sure to only use the rug which goes well with his or her current size.
Now, once you have discovered any signs of rug sores—hair patches and cracked or exposed skin-- the first thing to do is clean the area daily with an antiseptic wash. This will prevent the sores from developing an infection. If possible, do not your horse wear any clothing until the sores have completely healed. However, if this is not possible, use a sterile dressing to cover the affected area so it won't get rubbed.
During the summer and your pet is grazing outside, you may spray some fly repellant around the sores (not directly on them) to discourage the flies to lay eggs on them. Fresh air would do great wonders on your pet's sores so make sure he or she gets enough of it whenever possible.
All turnout rugs and the ones used in the stable must be spot-cleaned and laundered │ washed regularly to ensure that dead skin and fallen hair would not build up on their linings. The buildup may start bacterial infection on your pet's sores and should therefore be eliminated. You can choose to wash the rugs yourself or have them cleaned by the experts. The latter choice may be but if the cleaner is reputable, you can definitely get your money's worth.
