Meeting someone and falling in love and then getting married was not a factor in the Chinese traditional wedding system. The procedure you had to follow was far more complicated than that. There was a step-by-step process that had to be adhered to which finally would lead to the Chinese wedding ceremony.
The young couple had no say at all; the desire of their parents for their union was the deciding factor. The wedding ceremony would be arranged once a boy's parents had found a matchmaker to accompany them to the girl's parent to make the proposal. The parents would have to take the social status and wealth of both families into account and decide whether the match would be perfect.
Only then would the wedding ceremony be agreed upon. It was not possible for a boy from a wealthy family to marry a girl from a family without wealth. The process of marriage was based on three letters as well as six customs.
Two of the three letters was the betrothal letter and the gift letter where the list of gifts was included. The third is the wedding letter which is utilized once the boy met his bride at her family home. The six customs would then culminate in the actual wedding ceremony.
Once a match wants to be made, the male's parents would request the services of a matchmaker to assist them to make the proposal at the bride's home. They would then acquire her full name and date of birth. At this point a fortune teller would be consulted.
They would consult a fortune teller to match the birth dates of the couple in order to predict if this would be a contented and prosperous union. If all the predictions are favorable, the matchmaker would then be called in to inform the girl's parents about the continuance of a wedding. The matchmaker would do this by delivering gifts to them.
The wedding date would be decided upon once a fortune-teller has chosen it. This would be based on when it will be favorable to have a wedding ceremony. The wedding ceremony begins with the groom, with his party, meeting his bride at her home.
There would be other ceremonial activities that take place before the couple will finally be married. Marriage customs differed by region. This was the most common Chinese wedding ceremony.
