A lunar calendar follows the moon's phases. A solar calendar - such as the Gregorian calendar used in the West - follows the movements of the sun. The Chinese lunar calendar actually incorporates solar and lunar motion. This makes it - technically - a "lunisolar" calendar.
The more accurate measurement - over a year - of the solar calendar was needed by farmers who used this information to know when to plant and harvest their crops. The sun's motion makes it easier to track for this purpose. Within the Chinese calendar, there are twenty-four equal portions placed within it to aid the farmer.
There are 9 festivals found throughout the Chinese calendar. These festivals land on different days each year as per the West's Gregorian calendar. A few are close to similar celebrations viewed by both the Chinese and the West.
The Chinese New Year falls on the first day in the first month. In the West, the Gregorian calendar shows this as January 1. In 2010, it wasn't until February 14 - when we were celebrating Valentine's day - that the new year began for China. February 28, 2010 was the Lantern festival. It is always in the first month and on the 15th day of the Asian calendar.
The third festival is Qingming. It is known as the "Clear and Bright" celebration. It's held April 4th or April 5th. This year it was April 5th. The Chinese love Dragons. The Dragon Boat Festival - held on month 5, day 5 - occurred June 16 of 2010.
Just as we celebrate Valentine's Day on the 14th day of the second month every year; China has a day for "lovers" as well. Seven, seven - or the 7th day of the 7th month - is the romantic date for the Chinese. August 16, 2010 will be the "day for lovers" this year. Ironically, 8 days later - the 15th day and the 7th month - a ghost, or spirit festival is held.
At the time our fall usually appears, the Chinese have a family gathering and moon cake eating festival. This is in the eighth month and fifteenth day. This moon festival will appear on September 22 2010.
Two festivals fall on October 16 in 2010. They are found at different times in the fall. On the 9th day in the 9th month, is the Double Ninth festival. Xia Yuan is a prayer day for the Water God. It is held in month number 10, day 15.
The winter solstice is the "darkest" day of the year in the north. It is when the sun appears farthest south due to the way the Earth wobbles on its axis. As a result, this day sees the least amount of daylight out of the whole year. December 22, 2010 is the Chinese Winter Solstice Festival. The last festival of the Chinese Lunar calendar is in the 12th month on the 23rd day. Because of the difference in measurements, this "Kitchen God" festival already occurred on February 7, 2010.
