When Chinese astrology comes to mind, many people first consider the 12 zodiac animals or their daily horoscope. These elements do play a part, but astrology consists of so much more. Here is a list of some of the basic ideas behind this system and what it all means.
The Luni-Solar Calendar
The first thing to look at is the five elements of metal, water, wood, fire, and earth. Each of these has both a yin form and a yang form, making up the ten heavenly stems. As such, if a year ends in "0" it is a yin metal, a year ending in "1" is a yang metal, a year ending in "2" is a yin water, and so forth. However, it is also worthy of remembering that since the Chinese calendar is based on lunar and solar cycles it is slightly different from the Gregorian calendar, so a cycle may not reset itself exactly on January 1st. The Chinese New Year will take place anywhere between early January and early February.
The Zodiac Calendar
As many people are familiar with, there are twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. These twelve animals interact with the luni-solar calendar, as each year is assigned an animal. It takes sixty years to go through all combinations of yin, yang, animals, and elements, completing one cycle. This cycle always begins with yang wood rat and ends with yin water boar. Each animal represents a different personality or aspect of one's character. However, animals are also assigned to days, months, and hours, so a person may have a combination of many different animals.
The Stars and Planets
The planets and stars and their alignment are also very important. Each major planet is assigned to one of the five elements. Venus is metal, Mercury is water, Jupiter is wood, Mars is fire, and Saturn is earth. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are not included. The stars are also divided into 28 constellations, all of which are the subject of many stories, much like the Western constellations. It is said that the position and alignment of these constellations and planets can be used to determine one's fortune and destiny.
Chinese astrology is very complicated, and is about much more than the popular zodiac animals and horoscope readings. Many people even today still believe in this system, both in the East and the West.
