In these modern times humans, are busy with balancing their roles to their loved ones and their obligations to the society. They work at this so much that they tend to abandon themselves. When they are worn out or fall ill due to burnouts or stress, they seek peace of mind, energy renewal of the body and wellness of the spirit through various procedures. For this reason, they return to the basics; this is when complementary alternative medicine appeals to them. Whether you are seeking a cure for an ailment or simply wanting to be relieved of accumulated tension, Ayurveda medicine may be one realm you will be interested to try.
Going back to its Sanskrit meaning, Ayurveda is the union of two words ayus meaning life or longevity and veda meaning knowledge. Put together, it means the knowledge of longevity. As a science, it intends to reunite the mind, body, and soul so it can perform optimally. One concept to understand in Ayurveda is the three realms of the body or doshas which gives each body its Gunas or qualities. These Doshas compose each cell of the human body; health and wellness follows when there is a balance between:
1. Vata Dosha – The primary mover of the body. It is the most important dosha, as it highly rules all excretory and metabolic functions of the body. It is also responsible for the sensory functions (nerves) and all involuntary processes such as respiration, heartbeats and muscle contractions. Chronic suffering of this dosha can affect the other two which in due time can cause the tridoshic imbalance, the most difficult imbalance to overcome. This is characterized by coldness, dryness, lightness and the ability to penetrate fine particles.
2. Pitta Dosha – Provides for the change or metabolism of chemicals in the body. Responsible for person's intake of information and nutrients such as intellectual capacity, motivation (mental power) and the senses which enable him to do such functions (vision, hearing, and thermoregulation). Its standout qualities are penetrating, hot and sharp but can be foul-smelling when excessively present.
3. Kappa Dosha – Being the most dense of the three doshas, this provides for the structure and lubrication of the tissues. Responsible in the provision of muscle strength and power, lubrication, stability and fertility. Can be discerned when there is density, coolness, heaviness and oiliness.
During birth, these doshas are said to be balanced. Natural imbalances occur as a person ages or his environment changes. These natural imbalances impose minimal disunity. On the other hand, unnatural imbalances such as improper diet, accumulated stress, inadequate exercise impose the most damage. How do Ayurvedic treatments achieve the goal of equilibrium? As enumerated, doshas have unique qualities that one can perceive when there is an excess of lack thereof. Yoga, meditation and herbalism mimic such qualities and aim to provide balance by imposing it to the body. The treatments used differ on each person's body depending on the doshas dominant in it. Ancient formulas such as buttermilk, yogurt and heavy herbal oils are massaged onto the body vigorously for absorption through fine particles, poured on a body part or applied as facial mask or poultices to imitate the feeling of denseness or heavy penetration. Massages aim to return energy and enhance blood flow for faster transport of nutrients. Diets, enemas and even staying in a controlled environment (a treatment box) are also used as variety of detoxification. Surgery on cases such as cataracts is used, though rarely.
