Erectile dysfunction is a sickness that inhibits the penis from reaching its full size during sexual activity. It can be caused by many conditions and disorders. The main contributing factor to erectile dysfunction is the lack of blood entering the penis. This would prevent the penile shaft from elongating. This is a problem commonly encountered by old people due to problems in their blood circulation. This could also happen in young and middle aged people who have obstruction in their veins and arteries.
Erectile dysfunction can be better explained by illustrating how penile erection occurs. The corpora carvenosa is the vein which enables the penis to harden and elongate. During sexual arousal, the brain releases hormones that allow people to experience excitement. The hormones would directly act on the corpora carvenosa or the penile veins. The penile veins would enlarge to allow large amounts of blood to enter the penis. The blood would be continuously pumped until the penile shaft has been maximally stretched. When a certain condition would inhibit one of the processes involved, erectile dysfunction would occur.
The most common cause of erectile dysfunction is increased blood cholesterol. The cholesterol tends to form plaques or layers of fat that block the veins or blood vessels that pump blood to the penis. Erectile dysfunction could also be caused by low blood pressure or hypotension. Hypotension is equated to lack of blood in the body. This means that the blood cannot reach the penile area even though there is sexual stimulation. Diabetes is another disease that blocks the vein. overload sugar in the body causes build up of substances in the blood vessels. Sometimes, this occurs in the penile vessels.
Some medications also cause erectile dysfunction. This would include heart medications that lower blood pressure by decreasing blood volume. Angiotensin blockers are medications that cause this adverse effect. This works by signaling the kidneys to excrete more urine. This would result in less blood flow to the penis. Many people taking this medication should be warned of the high possibility of erectile dysfunction. Other medications such as beta blockers and calcium channel blockers also have this effect.
Erectile dysfunction can be prevented through proper diet and exercise. People should avoid high fat diet by eating steamed meat and vegetables. This would allow better blood circulation and avoid build up of fats in the blood vessels. People should also exercise regularly. Running and brisk walking are recommended since they improve cardiovascular function.
A lot of medications have been made in order to deal with erectile dysfunction. One of the most popular options is Viagra. Vaigra has been proven to work for people of different ages without any problems. The Viagra allows the blood vessels in the penis to widen which allows more blood to flow in the penile area. Old people who have been using Viagra were satisfied with the results. It has given them the chance to enjoy sex even though they are at the later stage of their lives.
