New Years, The Most Important Holiday On Chinese Calendars

The celebration of the Chinese New Year commences from midway through the twelfth month of the year, to just about half way through the first month of the year. Given that the Chinese calendars use a lunar based system, their months correspond with the moon cycles instead of the cycle of the sun as in a solar calendars used in the West.

For thousands of years, The New Year festival has been the most significant festival on the China's calendar. It is a celebration that requires weeks and sometimes month of planning and set up. It is very normal to have a few weeks off from jobs and school to help get ready.

The main focus of the New Year celebration to Chinese families is family and home. It is believed the Gods would come down from above for house and home inspections. For this reason many families will cleanse their homes thoroughly to appease the Gods. Many of the traditional activities practiced on Chinese New Year were done to bring good luck to the household with an extra emphasis on the parents.

It is traditional during the Dragon Parade to toss firecrackers at the dragon dancer's feet. The noise is supposed to help them stay awake during the celebration. The fireworks are also set off in the anticipation that the dragon will arise from his winters slumber after hearing the firecrackers. As he soars through the sky, he will bring with him the essential rain for the season's crops. Most families relied heavily on crops for their livelihood so this part of the festival was essential to the prosperity for the coming year.

Many activities are started this time of year as a way of welcoming the coming year with open arms. Activities like painting doors red, purchasing a new wardrobe or car, receiving a new haircut, and paying outstanding bills all can be ways of happily greeting the next year. People are also know to leave small messages of good luck and prosperity on their neighborhood gates and doors.

The most vital piece of this event is the huge banquets that are prepared by and for families far and wide to celebrate the upcoming year. Many foods are prepared and eaten as a way to symbolize the longevity of the pending year. All foods cooked during this time have their roots in the Chinese old ways. During the beginning of the festival long noodles are eaten to remind everyone that the year ahead would be long.

Be it chicken, a whole fish, spring rolls, or dumplings. All foods consumed for the duration of the festival have an explanation and a particular link to the centuries old customs that surround this celebration.
