If you own a pet dog or cat there are times when you simply must take a photo. A good photograph will not only be a useful reminder of your pet but can be used as a reference for a pet portrait artist. Due to time and logistics, quite a few pet portrait artists tend to work from photographs, so to have one that really tells the story of your pet can become the foundation to a beautiful portrait painting that will last a lifetime and be a great way of adding that personal touch to your home.
Some of the best times to take a photo is when your pet is playing, lying in their favourite chair or adopting a familiar expression. These little traits are forgotten so quickly, but say so much about your pet and a pet portrait is the ideal way to capture them. So, when that moment arises, what's the best way to make sure you get the perfect photo?
Firstly, be patient. Chances are, as soon as you rush off to get the camera, our little darlings will promptly stop whatever it is they're doing. If there is a place where they usually like to play (this is normally where pet feels most at ease), leave the camera somewhere in the vicinity, it can then be easily reached when the moment arises. Also, be sure you have enough film or memory left in the camera and that the batteries aren't likely to fade when you point the camera!
Secondly, think about the composition. If your pet has a dark coat, avoid dark backgrounds, and similarly lighter coloured pets don't show up well against light backgrounds, contrast is the key. It's best to avoid complicated backgrounds, too much going on in the background will divert the viewers attention away from the main feature (your pet!). Also, know the limits of your camera, don't get too close to your subject, so that the lens struggles to focus on your pet. Remember, the scene might look good through the viewfinder, but the lens may be seeing something completely different.
Thirdly, lighting. If you take the picture in the house, try to choose a room with bright natural light to avoid using the flash. A flash will cast a very strong directional light that will produce hard shadows and the "manic eye" effect. If you get the chance to photograph your pet outside, do it early in the morning or evening as strong midday sun can make a picture look 'flat', on the other hand overcast days will soften hard shadows making it more conducive for photography.
Lastly, try interesting angles. Try not to take a picture from 'a human point of view' as this is the angle you see day-in and day-out, alternatively try taking it at 'pet level' to get something a little different. In addition, a toy can be a useful tool for distracting your cat and making them to look in the right direction.
Over time, you'll get some great looking pictures and, when you do, consider using them as references for a pet portrait artist, they'll be able to transform them into a stunning oil painting that will be a wonderful reminder of your pet for many years to come.
