A frame is an important factor in enhancing the visual impact of a painting. It provides a link between the work of art and the environment in which it hangs, and must be either a clear visual barrier or an area of harmony, in order to bring the two together. This is partly why gold has traditionally been used on picture frames; it's brilliance is striking, yet at the same time, it also has the capacity to reflect surrounding colours and tones, so that, in theory, a gilt frame will fit into any location. Modern framing suppliers now offer an extraordinary range of mouldings, some of which are clearly linked to interior design. Their potential is excellent, but the process of matching mouldings and mounts with different works, is an art in itself.
It is possible to offer several practical hints on framing.
Always ensure that the frame is deep enough to encompass the frame properly. The frame should carry the picture, not the other way round, and the chord from which it hangs should be attached to the frame and not the painting stretcher or back panel. Ideally, the chord should be fixed just above the centre, so that the painting hangs with a slight tilt, letting air circulate and keeping dust off the picture. If framed behind glass, paintings should always be kept away from the glass by use of a mount or slip (beading). The glass and the backing board should be sealed to the frame using gummed paper to prevent insects and dust getting in, this also helps protect it from the atmosphere. Whenever possible fittings should be made of brass as iron or steel will corrode.
Frames can often be found quite cheaply at auction. You may also find good quality frames with just slight damage, these can be restored and brought back to life for next to nothing. As long as the frame is not an expensive antique, it's perfectly possible for you to repair much of the damage yourself.
Re-gluing.
Movement in the wood due to exposure to hot and cold environments will cause previously glued joints to come apart. If the securing pins are still straight, these can be easily tapped back and re-glued. Start by simply brushing away any dust or dirt and scrape away the old glue. Apply fresh glue and secure the corners in place with a clamp until dry. If you don't have a frame clamp, you can improvise with wooden blocks and string; put two blocks at the centre of each side of the frame, tie the string firmly around the block, then move them towards the corners to tighten the string.
Reinforcing corners
To strengthen any corners and protect them from further movement, use metal corner plates or pieces of plywood screwed to the reverse of the frame. Be sure the frame is wide or deep enough to take the screws without splitting the wood or coming out the other side!
Replacing damaged sections in moulded frames
Small chips in moulded frames can be repaired with plastic wood or cellulose filler. For larger areas of damage, take an impression (using model-casting rubber or dental compound) of a similar undamaged part of the frame. Use this to make a mould by pinning the casting material to a flat piece of wood strip, this then can be filled with fibre-glass paste to create a new piece. The finished piece can then be sanded then painted or gilded to match the original.
