Your automobile engine needs motor oil while driving to lubricate its various parts and help control the heat surrounding the assembly. Without it, the parts would create friction to the point of destroying each other. The temperature would also climb until your engine either overheated or seized. Either way, the assembly would likely be severely destroyed and need to be repaired or replaced.
Despite the importance of motor oil to the smooth operation of your engine, few drivers understand its purpose. This has led to several common myths; some are partly true while others are completely false. Coming up, I'll clarify the most prevalent.
Changing Oil Type Will Damage The Engine
There are many types of motor oil. Along with conventional fluids, you can purchase synthetics, synthetic blends, and those that are designed for automobiles with high mileage. Changing from one type to another will not damage your engine in any way.
Heavier Fluids Are Superior
Not necessarily. If you own an older car and have never had the engine replaced, a heavier viscosity may be beneficial. Otherwise, refer to your owner's manual. The automaker will have recommended the viscosity that is appropriate for your vehicle.
Darker Fluids Need To Be Replaced
This may or may not be the case. Motor oils have detergents in them that help keep the internal portion of your engine clean. The cleaning process causes the fluid to darken. That means if your oil is dark, it is doing an effective job.
A much better barometer of the quality of your oil is its consistency. If the fluid is thicker than it was when you originally put it in, change it.
Motor Oil Should Be Changed Every 3,000 Miles
This depends on the type of driving you do. If you constantly drive in severe conditions, changing the oil every 3,000 miles may be appropriate. "Severe" can include stop-and-go traffic, extreme temperatures, and using your car to tow other items. If you drive in normal conditions, follow the recommended interval in your owner's manual. For most drivers, changing the oil every 5,000 miles is sufficient.
Older automobiles Should Not Use Synthetics
In reality, synthetics and synthetic blends are usually fine for older vehicles. The only necessary precaution is to make sure your engine does not have any leaks before using a synthetic oil.
Synthetics Provide Less Lubrication
Because synthetic and blends are "thinner" than traditional fluids, it's common to think they are less able to lubricate an engine's moving parts. While they are thinner, synthetic formulas have additional additives in them to increase their lubrication ability. Moreover, these additives also improve the fluid's heat transfer ability.
Synthetic Formulas Are Not Real Oil
In fact, they are real. They are formulated from crude, similar to conventional fluids. The difference between the two oil types is that synthetics have additional additives (mentioned earlier) to help them prevent friction and control heat. They have also been put through a modified process before coming to market.
Selecting the right type of motor oil - synthetic versus traditional - is less important than using the proper viscosity. What's more, it is critical that you follow your owner's manual with regard to the recommended service interval. Very few maintenance items have as great an impact on the smooth operation of your vehicle as regular oil changes.
In addition to spark knock, overheating due to lack of lubrication is one of the most common reasons automotive engines fail. Keep in mind that replacing or overhauling the assembly can cost thousands of dollars. To be sure, your engine will eventually need to be replaced due to normal wear and tear. But you can postpone that event for years simply by changing the oil on a regular basis.
