In the wide field of alternative power resources, wind power is one of the most interesting. Why? Because unlike other power resources alternative, wind power is the only one that is readily available and it does not undergo complex processes anymore.
People started to make use of wind power a long time ago. Back then, wind power was used to propel ships and boats. Architects as well used wind power for the ventilation of buildings that they construct. People from South West Asia used wind mills for milling and irrigation purposes. Wind pumps were the main contributor to the development of transportation through trains. Getting water from wells and stream locomotives was also made possible through the use of wind power. In isolated rural areas, small wind turbines were used as a source of electricity during the first part of 20th century.
Wind power is the transformation of wind energy into usable form of energy, using turbines to produce electricity and water pumps or drainages. Mechanical power is generated through wind mills as well.
Since sun unevenly heats the earth's surface, the equator receives more energy compared to the earth's poles. So dry lands heat up more fastly than seas do. This varying degree of heating in the earth's atmosphere affects not just the surface of the earth but the stratosphere as well. The energy stored in these wind movements are usually found at higher places where faster and more steady wind movements take place. Their speed reaches over 160km/hr. And finally, friction transforms the wind energy into scattered and uneven heat affecting the whole Earth's surface and atmosphere.
Last 2009, the wind power generators in the world reached 2% of worldwide electricity usage. This is a big growth as compared to the previous years. It has grown rapidly and has already tripled in past three years. The leading countries that have also adapted wind power are Denmark, Spain, Germany, Portugal and Republic of Ireland. As of May 2009, eighty countries also started to make use of wind power.
There are varied types of wind farms. Some are large-scale which are used for business purposes; while some are just small-scale which are for own use only. Those farms that are large-scale are connected to the electric power transmission network. Small-scale farms are used to give electricity supplies in homes. But it can also be used to provide energy in remote areas. Furthermore, the electricity generated by domestic turbines is bought by utility companies.
Wind power is also an excellent alternative to fossil fuels because wind is renewable, widely distributed, clean, and most of all, does not emit waste and gas emissions when they are operated. It is not a big surprise why the number of people joining the green movement is growing more and more each year. Because of the threat of global warming, many people have started recycling and caring more about the environment. Not only people have gone green for the environment, but also for their own health as well. People have started to choose organic food, especially vegetables and fruits. Not only does going green benefit their health and the environment, but it also helps in reducing their monthly expenses.
